Classwork for 10-28-19

1.) Bell Work:
“It is a fearful thing to lead this great peaceful people into war, into the most terrible and disastrous of all wars…But the right is more precious than peace, and we shall fight for things which we have always carried nearest to our hearts — for democracy; for the right of those who submit to authority to have a voice in their own Governments; for the rights and liberties of small nations; for universal dominion of right by such a concert of free peoples as shall bring peace and safety to all nations and make the world itself at last free.” –Woodrow Wilson, speech asking Congress to declare war on Germany (April 2, 1917)
a.) What is the main theme of the primary source?
b.) Reflect back on what we learned about the age of American imperialism/expansionism, why is Wilson’s statement that we fight “for the right of those who submit to authority to have a voice in their own Governments” particularly ironic?
c.) Imagine you were a United States Congressman listening to President Wilson’s speech. Based on this excerpt would you cast your vote in favor of passing a declaration of war against Germany or would you stick to an isolationist principle and vote against a declaration of war? Please provide the reasons behind your decision.

2.) Begin Section 3 Notes in class using textbook pages 388-395. Only Section 3 needs to be completed today.
