Week of October 10, 2016

This week in 5th grade we will be learning…

Language Arts: This week students will continue learning about narrative stories and focusing on Historical Fiction. While, they are reading each student will focus on a specific reading strategy (main idea, story elements, sequence of events, and parts of speech).  During Daily 5 students will continue practicing Daily 5 procedures and focus on learning about various strategies that will help make them better readers.  We will be focusing on QAR strategies to help them answer comprehension questions.  In writing we will be focusing on writing a Historical Fiction piece about life as a Native American.  Students will have to read an informational article set to their level on Frontrowed.com (same login and password as the math) with guided reading questions everyday.

Spelling Words-

  1. Apples group– did, rip, fin, ripe, pick, dog, tell, hut (CVC a, e, i, o, u)
  2. Bananas & Carrots group- flight, slight sigh, fright, bright, might, climb, twice (long i vowel sound)
  3. Dragon fruit & Eggplant group- punish, until, disrupt, disgust, subtraction, reluctant,valuable,excuse (short and long u vowel sound)

Math: This week we will continue learning about Unit 2 Place value, decimals, and using base ten blocks. Starting this week your child should go on frontrowed.com every night for extra math practice.  They log in using their first name and their last name.  The class code is k9kyvt.

Science: We will continue learning about forces and motion focusing on Newton’s Laws of Motion.  Research with your child about Forces and Motion and find out these questions…

  1. How is the motion of an object described relative to its point of reference?
  2. How do forces affect the motion of objects?

Social Studies: We will continue learning about Three Worlds Meet.  Research with your child about the worlds America, Africa, and Europe and find out these questions…

  1. How were the worlds of America, Africa, and Europe alike and different?
  2. How and why did the three worlds meet?

Vocabulary Words- force, motion, friction, inertia, gravity, and newton.

  2. Bananas & Carrots group- oxygen umbrella, strap, bent, prime, shipment, staple, because, hope, south

Welcome to Mrs. Chamseddine’s 5th Grade

Welcome Parents and 5th graders to our blog and classroom.  I’m really excited to start the year off and begin our wonderful journey together.  The year will be full of immense learning and fun activities.

Week of June 6, 2016

Language Arts: This week students will continue reading informational articles (science and history) set to their own reading level in class and at home. While, they are reading each student will focus on a specific reading strategy (main idea, sequence of events, and parts of speech). We will begin learning about Science Fiction. During Daily 5 students will continue learning about various strategies that will help make them better readers.  Focusing on QAR strategies to help them answer comprehension questions.  In writing we will be focusing on writing informational piece about pollution.  Students must write a long constructed response using RACE (restate the question, answer, cite using evidence, and Explain further).  In spelling we are focusing on Greek root ‘ambi’ & ‘aero’.  Students will receive 5 spelling words and 5 vocabulary words each week.  Students will begin taking home an informational article set to their level with guided reading questions, that must be completed each night.

Spelling words: ambiguous, aerobics, ambition, ambivalent, aerosol

Vocabulary words: digestive, amendment, ratio, balances, evaluate 

Math: This week we will begin learning about ratios and reviewing basic skills.  Your child should go on frontrowed.com every night for extra math practice.  They log in using their first name and the first initial of their last name and the class code is k9kyvt.

Science: We will continue learning about Life Science focusing on body systems.  Students have been researching each body system and will be teaching the facts about their body system to the class.

Social Studies: We will begin reviewing essential civics and government concepts.  Research with your child about the U.S. constitution and find out these questions…

  1. Why the U.S. has established both state and federal government?
  2. How is our government organized?
