This week in 5th grade we will be learning…

Language Arts: This week students will learning about informational/expository writing. While, they are reading each student will focus on a specific reading strategy (main idea, story elements, sequence of events, and parts of speech).  During Daily 5 students will continue practicing Daily 5 procedures and focus on learning about various strategies that will help make them better readers.  We will be focusing on QAR strategies to help them answer comprehension questions.  In writing we will be focusing on writing an informational piece about their personal goals.  Students will have to read an informational article set to their level on Frontrowed.com (same login and password as the math) with guided reading questions everyday.

Social Studies: We will begin learning about our country’s government.  Research with your child about the Solar system and find out these questions…

1. What is a Constitution?
2. Why do countries have governments?

Today we worked in groups and tried to build the tallest freestanding tower. The challenge was to work as a team to build the tallest freestanding tower. Students were only allowed to use 20 sticks of spaghetti, 1 yard of tape, 1 yard of string, and 1 cotton ball.  Look below and see how much fun the students were having and how well they were working together.

Hello All!

It has been a busy couple of months with testing.  Students finished M-STEP testing 2 weeks ago and we started NWEA testing this week.  They have been working hard and improving in all their assessments.  Way to go 5th grade, I’m so proud of you!!

5th grade went to Chicago today and will be there till tomorrow.  Zeinab, Amir, Abdulaziz, Yousif, and Mohamad we miss you all and hope you’re having a great time.

16. Patriotism – great loyalty to one’s country.
17. Petition – a formal written request for something made to a person in authority.
18. Political process – the system of citizens electing representatives or leaders to make decisions for people. The political process can also refer to steps of forming policy or making, enforcing, and interpreting laws.
19. Political system – a set of democratic principles and ideas that citizens follow.
20. Principles – the democratic ideas and values in American government including privacy, authority, power, justice/fairness, responsibility, patriotism, tolerance, and respect for the rights of others.
21. Privacy – the state of being alone or not being interfered with.
22. Respect – to be thoughtful of and caring of another person.
23. Rights and responsibilities – Rights are freedoms granted to American citizens that allow them to make their own choices. For example, American have the right to an education, to express ideas, and to vote for leaders. Responsibilities are duties that citizens have.
24. Rule – something you must or must not do.
25. Rule of Law – the belief that every citizen must follow the laws. Even the President must follow the laws of the country.
26. Social institution – a group or organization with a special purpose in a society or culture. Examples are family, local government, school, or a club.
27. Symbol – a drawing or object that stands for something else. The Statue of Liberty symbolizes equality and justice. The Bald Eagle symbolizes freedom and independence.
28. Tolerance – being willing to let others have their own beliefs and ways of behaving, even though it may be different from your own belief.
