This week in 5th grade we will be learning…

Language Arts: This week students will continue learning about theme and making connections in reading. While, they are reading each student will focus on a specific reading strategy (main idea, story elements, sequence of events, and parts of speech).  During Daily 5 students will continue practicing Daily 5 procedures and focus on learning about various strategies that will help make them better readers.  We will be focusing on QAR strategies to help them answer comprehension questions.  In writing we will be focusing on informational writing.  Students will have to read an informational article set to their level on Frontrowed.com (same login and password as the math) with guided reading questions everyday.

Vocabulary Words–  

Political Systems

1. Authority – the right to use power to control the behaviors of others.
2. Legislative Branch – the branch of government that makes the laws.
3. Executive Branch – the branch of government that enforces the laws made by the legislative branch.
4. Judicial Branch – the branch of government that interprets the laws and settles disputes.
5. Citizen – a person who is a member of a town, city, state, or country.
6. Civic participation – engaging in activities that contribute to the well-being of a community, i.e. obeying rules and laws, voting, getting a good education.
7. Community improvement – working to make the community better.
8. Compromise – a way to settle conflict by all sides agreeing to give up part of what they want.
9. Conflict – a disagreement among people or organizations.
10. Democracy – a form of government in which power is held by the people. The people exercise their power either directly or through elected representatives.
11. Government – a group of people who work together to bring order to a community, state, or nation. The main jobs of a government are to make and enforce laws.
12. Justice – the act of being fair and honest Landmark – 1) a familiar object at a place that people easily know as a part of that community; 2) an important object that reminds people of an important event or person. Independence Hall is a landmark in Philadelphia.
13. Maintain order – to keep the community clean, safe, and organized for the good of all citizens.
14. Participate – to take part in an activity.
15. Participation – taking part in or sharing in the activities of a group or organization.
16. Patriotism – great loyalty to one’s country.
17. Petition – a formal written request for something made to a person in authority.
18. Political process – the system of citizens electing representatives or leaders to make decisions for people. The political process can also refer to steps of forming policy or making, enforcing, and interpreting laws.
19. Political system – a set of democratic principles and ideas that citizens follow.
20. Principles – the democratic ideas and values in American government including privacy, authority, power, justice/fairness, responsibility, patriotism, tolerance, and respect for the rights of others.
21. Privacy – the state of being alone or not being interfered with.
22. Respect – to be thoughtful of and caring of another person.
23. Rights and responsibilities – Rights are freedoms granted to American citizens that allow them to make their own choices. For example, American have the right to an education, to express ideas, and to vote for leaders. Responsibilities are duties that citizens have.
24. Rule – something you must or must not do.
25. Rule of Law – the belief that every citizen must follow the laws. Even the President must follow the laws of the country.
26. Social institution – a group or organization with a special purpose in a society or culture. Examples are family, local government, school, or a club.
27. Symbol – a drawing or object that stands for something else. The Statue of Liberty symbolizes equality and justice. The Bald Eagle symbolizes freedom and independence.
28. Tolerance – being willing to let others have their own beliefs and ways of behaving, even though it may be different from your own belief.

Math: This week we will continue learning about and reviewing lessons from the beginning of the year.  Everyday students should go on frontrowed.com for extra math practice.  They log in using their first name and their last name.  The class code is k9kyvt.

Science: We will continue learning about Life Science Survival of Organisms.  Research with your child about the Solar system and find out these questions…

1.) How are the traits of species influenced by genetics and the environment?
2.) How do the behavioral and physical characteristics of organisms help them survive in their environment?
3.) How do we distinguish between inherited and acquired traits?
4.) How do fossils provide evidence about how species and environmental conditions have changed?
5.) How can species extinction be related to catastrophic events and environmental change?
6.) How do the similarities in traits help us classify organisms? 

Social Studies: We will begin learning about the American Revolution.  Research with your child about how and why different colonial regions developed in North America and find out these questions…

1. How did economic issues and political experiences and ideas affect the relationship between Great Britain and the colonies?
2. Why were some colonists unhappy with British rule after the French and Indian War?
3. How and why did people in different colonial regions unite against Great Britain?
