Grief Support Group @ Miller

Did you know that 6 out of 10 school-aged children will experience the loss of a loved one before they are 18?

Without help after this loss, these students are at risk for increased substance abuse, violence, suicide, teen pregnancy and academic failure. Their care-givers are equally at risk and are often not equipped to help their children while they deal with their own grief.

Open Arms Grief Support

Open Arms is a grieving children’s support program that helps children ages 3-17 years and their family members find healthy ways to cope with their feelings of sadness, anger or frustration, and be able to return to their day-to-day activities. Open Arms has become a place of comfort for children and adults who are surviving the loss of a loved one.

Open Arms helps grieving children through five program components:

  • Grief support groups for children and their families
  • Ten week school-based grief support groups
  • Homicide survivor support groups and individual grief therapy
  • Camp “Good Grief” a summer day camp that focuses on helping grieving children to just be a kid again
  • Trauma Response Team

Open Arms programs is being offered for our Miller Elementary students and their families in the school setting.

If you are interested in having your child be a part of this program or would like more information, please feel free to email:  boussiz@dearbornschools.org or call 313.827.7381.
