Plans for March 19th…

If you need to borrow a chrome book for your child to use at home, tomorrow (March 19th) is the ONLY day you can pick one up. Someone, possibly Mr. Martin will meet you at the front of the River Oaks building at 9am. You will drive up to River Oaks (stay in your car) and they will have you sign for the chromebook.

Chromebooks are expensive, if you are borrowing one, you are accepting responsibility for damage to it. Please be kind to our school technology!

*******Plans for next week will be sent over the weekend. Have a good weekend!******

HELP! FEEDBACK IS NEEDED!

“Remote learning” definitely has advantages and disadvantages! While I love the idea of preparing lessons from the comfort of my recliner in my comfy clothes- it’s really hard to see how the lessons are going with the kids. Teachers make adjustments to lessons as we go based on the needs of the kids. I can challenge them more or simplify the lesson as it is presented…but that is very difficult to do without actually being with the kids seeing how things are going. I NEED your feedback!

Please comment below on how things went this week. Use some/all of the questions to give me some feedback on how things went.

Lessons Presented this week: counting silverware, locating front/back/spine/first word in a book, hide and seek numbers, strawberry counting book, sock ball game, and pigeon drawing.

  • What lessons did you have to simplify for your child?
  • What lessons needed an extra challenge for your child?
  • What lesson was fun / uninteresting for your child?
  • Were you able to do the lessons? What stopped / motivated you?
  • Did you have the materials at home that you needed for the lessons? What adaptations did you make?
  • Was it helpful to have a routine for the day?
  • Were the screen time games helpful?

  • What can I do to make this an easier transition for you/your child?
  • How are you feeling about being “Ms. Bass” this week? 🙂

Any comments are appreciated, and will be used to make future lessons!

Free Breakfast and Lunch Pickup for Students

Dearborn Public Schools is offering free pickup lunch and breakfast for students while
school is closed for the mandatory shut down over the next three weeks.

Families will be able to stop in and pick up a bag with both breakfast and lunch for
each child in the family.  Pickups will run daily from 10 a.m. to noon starting today, March 17 at Fordson, Edsel Ford and Dearborn high schools, McCollough-Unis, Salina Intermediate, and Woodworth Middle School.

Signage at each site will direct parents and students where to enter the building. Food
will be near entrances to minimize the amount of time community members spend
in the facilities.

Please note, meals are available to anyone age 18 and younger.  Students do not need to be present, and the Dearborn School student does not need to attend at that building.  A designated person can collect meals for multiple children.  Meals for Saturday
and Sunday can be picked up on Friday.

The program will allow the District’s 20,700 students to continue to have access to
healthy food.  Gov. Gretchen Whitmer last week ordered all Michigan schools closed from March 16 through April 3 to slow the spread of novel coronavirus and cases of COVID-19.  Dearborn Schools is scheduled for spring break April 6 to 10, so school will not resume in the District until April 13.

The grab-and-go meals will be served at least through April 3.

Superintendent Glenn Maleyko praised the District’s food service team for quickly implementing this drastic change in service to meet the needs of families.

“We appreciate the patience of our families and community as we all try to adjust
to this sudden change from closing schools,” Dr. Maleyko said.  “More than three quarters of our students qualify for free or reduced priced school meals.  We realize this food is important to our families, many of whom may be facing additional financial hardships from the sudden economic changes related to COVID-19.”

Check the Dearborn Public Schools website at http://www.dearbornschools.org for any updates or changes to the meal program or for other issues regarding the school closure.

Plans for March 17th…

  • I found a better way to submit pictures and videos. Instead of emailing them to me, please use the link found at the bottom of plans pages to submit your photos and video check in’s. If you sent pictures/videos to me already, I will move them to the link!
  • I am using the Kindergarten Transition Assessment results to form plans for your child’s learning at home. You have the huge learning advantage to customize learning to what your child needs by using that data. If you need a copy of your child’s Kindergarten Transition Assessment, email me ASAP. I did grab all of the kids’ before I left the school- whew! I will send a copy to your email.

Plans for March 16th…

Parents,
Thank you for responding to the classroom iblog.  Several of you emailed about our classroom routine and what to continue working on while children are learning at home for the next few weeks.  After looking for sample routines and trying to be practical, I put together a sample routine that may work for your Preschooler.  Feel free to use it, or customize it to make it work for you.

What is included in that plan, are some activities are for your child to practice at home.  There are YouTube videos that I have recorded and games that work on skills that children would be practicing with us at school, if we were together.   I know some of you are working outside the home- share this plan with those taking care of your children or do the activities highlighted in yellow when you are with your child after work.

All Dearborn Public School teachers will be posting activities that students can complete at home, due to school closings.  All teachers will be checking in on students to ensure they are learning at home.  Time is precious and we don’t want to waste learning time because we are not together!  Plans for upcoming days at home will be sent as I complete them.

Please give me some comments about the plans as we go!  What is working and what is not working?  It took a great deal of time to put this together for you, I want to make sure it is useful for you and your children.

A Message from Ms. Modica

PreK parents: Below you will find a copy of the iblog posting that was sent to all GSRP families. Since we do not have school today, I thought it important to share.

A Message from the Principal regarding COVID-19

MARCH 12, 2020AMY MODICA | EDIT

Dear Dearborn GSRP Families,

With the latest COVID-19 pandemic now infiltrating Michigan it is best we stick to the facts and don’t pay attention to all of the “false” news on social media, but instead educate ourselves and parents regarding the science behind the virus.  Please access the Wayne County Health Department at the following URL for the most up to date information:

https://www.waynecounty.com/departments/hhvs/wellness/novel-coronavirus-information.aspx

I also want to share the steps that we are continuing to take in each of the GSRP classrooms to support a healthy environment for our students.

  1. Our custodians will continue to clean and disinfect all surface areas including desks, tables, door handles, and other classroom items.
  2. We will have teachers serving the food to students during breakfast, lunch and snack. All food will be served by the teacher directly to the student for the time being.
  3. Students and staff continue to wash hands regularly throughout the day.

Good hygiene practices will help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other respiratory diseases. Please follow these recommendations and encourage all family members to do the same.

  1. Stay home if you are sick, and advise others to do the same.
  2. Always cover coughs or sneezes with a tissue or sleeve.
  3. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  4. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
  5. Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol if soap and warm water are not available.
  6. Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

The following resources were shared by the district administration team to support parents in discussing COVID-19 with their children. Please click on the links below to review these documents.

The health and safety of our students is always our first priority. We will continue to share information on the school blog as it becomes available. Additional information is also available on the district’s website.
