Mrs. Hickson's Class

Dearborn Public Schools

Welcome to Mrs. Hickson’s Class 2015 – 16

Hi all,

If you are reading this you are probably one of the students in my class this year!  If you are an adult reading this alone please go get your student so they can read my blog with you!  This blog will be addressed to the students, for the most part, all year.

Welcome to my class!!  I am very excited about the upcoming school year!  We will have a learning community of both fifth and fourth graders, which I have never done before, so we will all be learning new things this year!

The supplies you will need:

*The usual pencils, pens, and highlighters.  You will use black, blue, and red pens this year.

*A small personal pencil sharpener. It saves time and I think sometimes that the sharpener in my room has a pencil eating troll living in it. 😀

*Loose leaf paper. Wide-ruled is probably best.  It gives you more room to write neatly and besides…I have older eyes than you.

*You will need a couple of folders.  I have plain ones, but if you want folders with Frozen, Star Wars (YAY), One Direction or something else on them you will      need to go shopping.  The same goes for a couple of spiral notebooks.

*You will use binders this year to stay organized.  They should be 1″ binders so they fit in your desk easily.  One should be white and will be used for your Leadership Binder.  You probably already have one from last year.  The second one will be used for literacy.  The third one will be used for the content areas (Math, Science, and SS.)  I do not care what these two binders have on them…kittens, Red Wings, Star Wars (YAY again)…whatever.  They can be soft side or hard side.

*You will need a couple packs of dividers to be used inside the binders.

*You also will be using crayons, markers, and colored pencils throughout the year.  I have some, but if you want the colors in the 128 box you will need to bring them in.

*Dry erase markers are a must!!  They don’t have to be fancy colors.  Also, if you want to erase with something other than the squares I cut from the dollar store baby blanket that I have you will need to bring that in too.

*We also always need lots of classroom size boxes of facial tissue and classroom size bottles of hand sanitizer.

*Head phones for the computer..we will be doing a lot of computer work this year.  Also, please bring in a flash drive.  These items do not have to be the most expensive ones.  (But I guess that’s up to your parents.)

***Please note that we WILL be having time for a snack on Tuesday.  Your snacks need to be healthy ones such as fruit, veggies, cheese & crackers etc.  Please don’t bring in cookies, candy, pop, chips or other junk food for snacks.  This is the rule for snacks for the whole year.  Also, please avoid bringing nuts on the first day.  I don’t know yet if this will need to be a rule for the year or just the first few days.  I will let you know as soon as I find out.

******If you are a morning safety please meet me in the cafeteria at 8:20 on Tuesday.  Bus safeties please work your bus posts.  Afternoon safeties I will talk to you and give you your belts during the morning on Tuesday.  Please tell your safety friends in the other classes!!

***************I can’t wait to see all of you on Tuesday!!!  This is going to be a great year!!!!  I am very excited and I hope all of you are too!!!!!*************

Science Test

We will be having a science test on Wednesday June 3rd.  The students were notified of this last week and were asked to write it in their planners and take their science materials home.  I’m hoping they did this.  They were given 55 minutes of class time today to review the material and their study guides. They should be bringing their materials home tonight and Tuesday night.  I am having all of them put it in their backpacks so I hope it makes it home.

Field trips

I would like to thank the following parents and grandparents who helped our class by coming along to the DIA last Friday:

Jeannette Capote

Barb Mitchell

Anthony Sleath

Robert Milligan

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Attention!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The fourth grade WILL be going on a field trip in June.  If you are not sure if your background check is still valid, please check now.  They expire after three years and several parents were unable to go to the DIA because their background checks had expired.   If you check now you may still have time to have it updated.  Please note****I am not taking names for possible chaperones yet.  I will ask for parents when we send the permission slip home.

NWEA Tests and PBiS

**Just a reminder that we are taking the NWEA tests this week.  I know it seems like we have been testing a lot…we have.  These tests are important for several reasons so please try to motivate your child to do their best!!!  They will not have homework but you can review basic skills in the subject areas being tested each evening.  Encourage your student to “finish strong.”

We have had a increase in clip moves because students are having a hard time following directions.  We also, unfortunately, have had a rise in rude and disrespectful behavior towards both adults and other students. Please discuss with your student the importance of ending the school year on a high note.  A discussion about our school expectations as well as a reminder about common courtesy  would be helpful for Room 204 to have a happy May and June.

Testing!!

Hi,

I just thought I would give you an update/reminder about testing for our class this week and next week.

**Our class will be taking the two day District Writing Assessment on

Thursday 4/23 and Friday 4/24.

**The fourth grade will be taking the ELA M-Step on Tuesday 4/28 and Wednesday 4/29.

It is very important that students get a good night’s sleep and then eat a good breakfast.  Each section of the test must be taken without breaks so we will work until the test is done by all students.  I cannot give you a guaranteed “snack time” schedule for the days we are testing.
