Happy Thursday!!!

Hi all, teachers are required to do virtual professional development all this week, therefore it may take me longer than normal to respond to your emails.

Please check through Google classroom to see what assignments you may be missing. Please complete assignments from before spring break if you have not done so already.

Students, if you are turning in an assignment on Google classroom that was assigned 3/16 – 4/3, please email me that you have turned it in. (This DOES NOT apply to students who are up to date with assignments.) Google classroom doesn’t notify me when you hand it in. This is not necessary for current assignments that were made this week, 4/13 – 4/17.

Also, some assignments are created by me and some are created by Mrs. Stetz. You should be doing all of them. This is similar to what we did in school but you might not have been aware of it.

Don’t forget that Mrs. Baloga, Mr. Harvey, Mr. Goedke, and Mrs Ackerman have assignments on Google classroom for you to work on.

Now let’s make some purple stew for breakfast!

You may always do it for extra practice if you need more work on yesterday’s objective. Please complete the Topic C Review assignment on Google Classroom. We will go over the review during our Google Hangout tomorrow. I will then post the answers later Friday as well in case you can not make our Hangout.

We will talk about it at our Zoom meeting on Friday so be ready with your thoughts. There is an assignment on Google classroom for you to complete. Don’t worry because it is not due until Monday so you will have plenty of time to finish it. If you have not watched the videos or completed the assignments from earlier this week please finish those first so you can follow the historical events in order. Let’s stay on the International Space Station for a little while to hear a just for fun read aloud.

I hope you all had a thrilling Thursday and that you learned something old, something new, and found something that gave you a laugh or at least a smile. Remember that you have the gift of being home with your family and try to do something fun with whoever you are at home with. Have an adult teach you to cook something or fix something. Create something by drawing, painting, or just building a sculpture out of stuff that you have around the house. Write a poem, a story, an informational article, or a journal. Make up a dance or a song or a silly exercise. I would love to hear one interesting thing you have done when we have our Zoom meeting.

ELA

This week we will work through the current issue of Scholastic News. Just like before we are going to the Scholastic News site and logging in with our google account. Here is the link:https://classroommagazines.scholastic.com/ For today finish reading the articles, Protecting Our Planet and Is It Ok to Swim With Manatees? Watch the videos as well. Complete the assignment on Google Classroom and hit turn in.

Social Studies: After the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the British went back to Boston. The Colonial Army kept them trapped there so they could not go out and attack other cities and towns. The British were still able to get supplies because they controlled Boston Harbor and the colonies did not have a navy. This lasted for months. The British had a hard time getting food because all their food had to be shipped from Britain and it often did not make it to Boston. The Colonial Army needed to get the British out of Boston without letting them go through the land. Remember when they took over Fort Ticonderoga? That becomes important now.

If you have not watched yesterday’s Liberty’s Kids watch it now. It focuses on several important events. One is the Colonial Army and their weaknesses, Washington’s famous speech convincing many of the soldiers to stay instead of go home when their enlistment time was done, the bringing of the cannons through the winter wilderness from Fort Ticonderoga to Boston, and the end of the siege of Boston. There is an assignment on Google classroom today. Please do not hand it in until you have viewed all the videos and read all the materials. You should probably take notes as you watch and read.

It’s always nice to take some time to draw so let’s draw a dolphin!

Now let’s join the astronauts on the International Space Station!

Now let’s listen to this just for fun story from space.

I hope you had a great day and learned something old, something new, and found something that gave you a smile.

Now let’s go bananas!!!

Welcome back to virtual room 205! I hope you all had a wonderful spring break!

I have emailed a list of guidelines and expectations for online learning to you. Please read it over with an adult.

Don’t forget that Mrs. Baloga, Mr. Harvey, Mr. Goedke, and Mrs Ackerman have assignments on Google classroom for you to work on.

Now get up and get moving to wake up your brain and body!

Math Great Minds has added new videos to help with the content. The link is to their free site. I will be including both videos, if available, in case you want 2 perspectives or one helps you understand better. Here is the link to the new site https://gm.greatminds.org/en-us/knowledge-for-grade-5 You just need to pick the module and lesson we are on for that day. This video is a bit longer, but goes through the lesson like I would in class, completing the problem set with together with explanations, think time, and answers. There is a part 2 and 3 that are shorter which complete the fluency work, a short review of past work and the application problem, usually a review of the lesson the day before. I would recommend the new site for a more thorough math lesson experience.

Today we are working on Module 5 lesson 12. Here is the link to the new: https://gm.greatminds.org/en-us/knowledge-for-grade-5-em-m5l12

old video: https://embarc.online/mod/page/view.php?id=316

Today we will do problem set numbers 1 a,c,d,2,3 and homework numbers 1 a,c,d,2,4

Science

We will start our final unit today, Web of Life, Ecosystems and the Food Web. This unit on ecology helps students develop the idea that plants, animals, and fungi form a system of interdependent parts, with each part dependent on the other parts for its material nourishment. By the end of the unit, students will come to the conclusion that organic matter is cycling through the living world.

Here is the link for the Anchor Phenomenon. The anchoring phenomenon for this unit focuses on attempts to grow food in an enclosed ecosystem. Students generate observations and questions about the phenomenon and create an initial design solution to growing food inside a dome for two years. Students will need to save the pages they complete for the entirety of the unit in a safe place. We will visit these after each mystery. Today you are only doing the first part of the video, and the See Think Wonder sheet. https://mysteryscience.com/ecosystems/mystery-0/ecosystem-design-modeling/242?code=MTI2MzM1NjE&t=student

Answers from yesterday’s math homework 5.10 https://embarc.online/mod/page/view.php?id=6304

Here is the answer to the application problem from lesson 10: They need 90 cubic feet of soil. Heidi was 2x5x3 = 30 and Andrew 2x5x6= 60. 60+30=90

Today we are working on Module 5 lesson 11 . Here is the link to the video:https://embarc.online/mod/page/view.php?id=314

This lessons will be like 9 and 10. Watch the video as usual and then move to the homework. The problem set pages do not have the numbers to solve because they are meant to be done as part of the lesson in class. If you would like extra practice, email me and I will give you the numbers, but do it after the homework page. Then move on to Zearn lesson 11. You can still do the application problems.

Science Here is today’s Mystery to watch; Can Animals get a Sunburn? Find out and go to your Google Classroom and answer the questions on the assignment with the same name. https://mysteryscience.com/mini-lessons/animal-sunburn?code=45ef565cfe6298d7acbf411452472148

ELA: Today you have a reading response on Google classroom. You will discuss how the characters in your novel synergized.

Scholastic News: Yesterday we will finished the issue 3-30-20: Stolen Gold. We referred to the article “Were You Fooled?” to find details
that support your answers. Remember to write in complete sentences. THEN, finish the magazine and complete the Quiz Whiz and News Review on the back page of the magazine in the Google Classroom assignment titled Scholastic News 3-30-20 Part 2.. Click on this link, then elementary, then on the 5/6 magazine. Then use the class code of 204math. https://classroommagazines.scholastic.com/ If you did not finish this yesterday, please finish it today.

Tuesday there was a new article to read called “Lost Treasure” from Scholastic News on Google classroom. You also have a couple of written assignments that go with it, Take Note and Close-Reading Questions. If you have not completed this assignment or last week’s reading responses or Readworks assignment, please finish those as well.

Novels: As you finish your book, you are going to do one final journal entry either explaining something you figured out, a surprise you had or a confirmation of a previous prediction. THEN you will write a book review. This would be like a commercial for the book, highlighting the title, author and basic plot of the book. You can recommend it as well if you think others should read it. Remember not to give away the ending. We don’t want to spoil a good book for anyone. Make it interesting and enjoyable to read. Use good word choice. If you also want to record yourself doing the commercial I would love to see it, email it to me. IF you want all of us to see it after break, ask you parents and I will email them out to just our class daily.

There is a new spelling list on Spelling City. Spend some time getting familiar with the words and their meanings. Study them and when you are ready have someone give you a spelling test!

I have had a couple people send me their personal narratives and graphic novels. It was wonderful to read them! I would love for you to use some of this time to write. Write a story, a poem, a journal, create a graphic novel…anything. Just keep your brain busy creating!

Social Studies: Two days after George Washington was chosen as the commander of the Continental Army, came the Battle of Bunker Hill…which didn’t actually happen on Bunker Hill…what?? Watch the video and find out!

If you cannot access the video through this link you can search “Liberty’s Kids episode 109” on Youtube and it will come up.

Now read this Ducksters article about the Battle of Bunker Hill and then take the quiz at the bottom. https://www.ducksters.com/history/battle_of_bunker_hill.php

Mo Willems can be watched LIVE each day at 1 pm on The Kennedy Center site or you can watch yesterday’s video below! I would love to see some of your doodles!

The Cincinnati Zoo has home safaris LIVE everyday on Facebook at 2:30. If you missed here you can watch this video to meet the Meerkats!

Now we will visit the International Space Station to find out what happens when astronauts get sick!

Join us on the International Space Station for day two of the book Ada Lace, Take Me to Your Leader.
