Science Fair Project Direction Update!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

*******Please follow the steps below today whether you started your experiment on Wednesday, Thursday or will start it tonight.
1. Place a drop (no more) of white vinegar in the middle of one of your petri dishes.
2. Using another cleaner, place a drop of cleaner in your second petri dish. You may use a cotton swab if you need to. It may help you get a small circle of cleaner in your petri dish.
3. Using your third cleaner, place a drop of cleaner in your third petri dish.
*** You may use cotton swabs if you need to. It may help you get a small circle of the cleaners in your petri dishes.

4. Cover each Petri dish with the top half and use a piece of paper or tape to label the dish with the name of the item you tested. Place the sealed Petri dish inside a zipper-lock bag and seal it closed. For safety reasons, do not ever open the zipper-lock bag – you can view the growing bacteria through the clear plastic bag.

5. Place the plates in a warm dark place to grow – not too warm, but anything up to about 98 degrees F (37 degrees C) should be fine. In a short time, you’ll be greeted by an amazing variety of bacteria, molds, and fungi. You should continue to see more and larger colonies for the next few days, but you should not see any growth where the disinfectants (cleaners) are. You might even see a “halo” around each spot where you placed the cleaners. This halo is called the “kill zone” – measure and compare the size of the kill zone to determine the effectiveness of different antibacterial agents. Remember… Do not open the plates once things begin to grow.
6. Remember not to open the zipper-lock bags during or after the experiment. When you’re finished analyzing your growing bacteria, dispose of the entire bag in the trash. Do not bring the petri dishes to school.

Science Experiments!!!!!!!!!

Please show your parents your science project materials tonight. Read over the directions with them several times before you start to be sure you understand the procedures. If you need help or have questions write them down so you can remember them for tomorrow.
*******Boards are due NO LATER than April 21st. Points will NOT be given for late boards.

**Fourth graders– If you wait too long to start your experiment your carnation will probably die and you will have to go buy another one. You probably should start as soon as you can.

**Fifth graders- The time frame for your experiment is seven days to grow bacteria followed by five days to test the cleaners. You will then need to finish your board. (Remember you can do quite a bit of the board while the experiment is going on.) You need to start this experiment right away so you will have time to finish. Saturday April 9th is really the last day you can start this experiment to have it done and finish your board by April 21st. (But…EEEKKKK…..that is cutting it really, really close.)

*******Remember that the experiment and board are worth 100 points. The presentation is another 50. If you want to earn all the points for this project make sure you spend time doing your best work. Although you are not required to come to the Science Boot Camp the science experiment, board and presentation ARE required for class.(Although you should come because it’s lots of fun!!)

M-Step Info.

Fifth graders will be taking Michigan’s required testing,
the M-Step, in the computer room this year. The on-line testing is required for all fifth graders attending a public school in Michigan. The fifth graders from our room will be taking the test during testing sessions with either Mrs. Bush’s or Mrs. Gardner’s class. The tests are supervised by the teachers and certain members of our school staff. The students will test for approx. an hour at a time and are scheduled for two test sessions per test day. Since the tests are not timed an accurate time period for how long each specific test will take for each student cannot be given.

M-Step Schedule

April 12- ELA Day 1
April 13- ELA Day 2
April 14- ELA Day 3
April 19- Math Day 1
April 20- Math Day 2
April 21- Social Studies(Only one day)

It is helpful if students get a full night’s sleep and eat a healthy breakfast on test days. Also, please avoid being absent or tardy if possible. Students who miss a test will be given the test during a make-up session(s) that will be scheduled as needed and will be supervised by qualified school staff members.

Here is a practice link we have used at school: https://wbte.drcedirect.com/MI/portals/mi/ott1

If you have any questions please feel free to call or email me.

Jump Rope for Heart

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART NEWS
I wanted to let everyone know that the Thank-You Prizes will be coming, but probably not until the 1st or 2nd week of April. I contacted the organization and it seems they are 4 to 6 weeks behind shipping, from the time they receive the paperwork (which was mailed March 3rd). I will pass-out the prizes to the students as soon as they arrive to Lindbergh. The plan also will be to a have an assembly April 13 to honor participants, recognize top fundraisers, and have a student jump rope exhibition (a fun closure for all the hard work raising $8200). Thanks again for your support and I appreciate your patience.
Mr. Murua
PE Teacher
