Google Meet: Our Google Meets for this week have been canceled as due to a temporary issue the district has asked us to refrain from having live meetings until further notice. I will be training on a new platform for meetings on Thursday morning. I will update you as to the status of the meetings. This week I will be recording sessions for you and attaching them to the student’s email. Please see the memo from the superintendent regarding this matter. We will be switching to a new platform for the live meetings only, which will take a short while to learn and prepare. In the meantime, please watch the recorded lessons and email and ask questions. I am here to help. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1XRPvpmUYfCR_sRq14PSTYoyatM8n2SiccuMqG2ZwzC0/edit?usp=sharing

The district has had the Continuity of Learning Plan approved. It is important for parents/guardians to read it so you will know how things have changed since we first began remote learning. If you go to the elementary section it explains how grades will be done and what is expected of students for the rest of the year. You can see it here: https://dearbornschools.org/services/dearborn-public-schools-continuity-of-learning-plan/.

Students, if you are turning in an assignment on Google classroom that was assigned 4/20 – 4/24 please email me that you have turned it in. (This DOES NOT apply to students who are up to date with assignments.) Google classroom doesn’t notify me when you hand it in. This is not necessary for current assignments that were made this week, 4/27 – 5/1. The most important thing right now is to start completing the work from April 20 through the rest of the year. I will not be accepting work from the week of 4/20 after Friday 5/1 so please make sure you have it done before then unless there is a health or technology issue that you contact me about.

Also, some assignments are created by me and some are created by Mrs. Stetz. You should be doing all of them. This is similar to what we did in school but you might not have been aware of it.

*********************Don’t forget that Mrs. Baloga, Mr. Harvey, Mr. Goeke, Mrs Ackerman, Mrs. Poisson, and Mr. Kwiecien have assignments on Google classroom for you to work on. Watch for Google meetings with these teachers!!************

Spelling: Don’t forget that you have activities on Spelling City to complete and a test to take on Friday. Only 1/3 of you have started the activities as of Tuesday at 6:30 pm. These are a required part of your grade!

Social Studies: Things are not going well for the Continental Army. It is the low point of the war for the Americans. They keep losing battles. Washington’s assistant, General Joseph Reed, questions the Commander’s ability to lead. General Lee ignores Washington’s orders and is eventually captured by the British (12/13/76). The Continental Congress, anticipating attack, flees Philadelphia for Baltimore (12/12/76). Many of the soldiers are planning on quitting and the average colonist thinks Washington is going to lose and are starting to give up. Washington knows he must win a battle or the revolution will fail from lack of public support. Thomas Paine wrote a phamphlet called “American Crisis” that told the colonists to stay strong and stay in the fight for freedom. It helped keep soldiers in the army and united the 13 colonies in their fight.

Now let’s get moving!!

Work that is assigned on Google Classroom needs to be turned in on Google Classroom. I am supposed to have your grades for your assignments on there and I cannot grade you if it is a picture emailed to me. You can do your work on regular paper, but at some point I need you to put your answers onto the page on Google Classroom and click hand in.

Math

Today we are working on Module 5 lesson 20/21, they are combined. Here is the link to the video:https://gm.greatminds.org/kotg-em/knowledge-for-grade-5-em-m5-l20 You have the lesson 20 template words in your books already ready to cut out.

Today we will do problem set numbers 1a-k and homework numbers 1

Doing the second 2 parts of the lesson, fluency and application problems would be good practice for the review tomorrow.

ELA

This week we will work through the current issue of Scholastic News, The Game that Changed My Life. Just like before, we are going to the Scholastic News site and logging in with our google account. Here is the link:https://classroommagazines.scholastic.com/  It is set up so that you can log in through google classroom. For today and tomorrow read the articles, A Place to Call Home and Should you Stand up to a Bully? Watch the videos as well. Complete the assignment on Google Classroom titled Scholastic News 4-27 Part 1 and hit turn in.

Spelling: There is a new list and some activities assigned on Spelling City. If you do one activity a day you will be ready to take the test on Friday. These are required activities and a required spelling test. Last week only 8 students did the activities and took the spelling test. Please be sure you are completing assignments on Spelling City each week.

Science

Planning: I will be spacing the Mystery out over the week, a little part each day, with a quiz assignment on Thursday. If you prefer, you may pace yourself as needed, as you will have access to the whole Mystery and activity sheets for the week on Monday. I hope this gives you flexibility as needed at home.

In this week’s Mystery 2, In this Mystery, students discover the surprising nutrient which accounts for most of a plant’s food. In the activity, Weighing Air, on Tuesday, students blow up balloons and place them on both sides of a large balance scale constructed from a yardstick and binder clips or string. Then, students let the air out of all the balloons on one side of the balance to directly observe that air has weight. Today, start the video and watch the exploration part. You should have your anchor phenomenon papers handy and a blank page to take notes during the Mystery this week. Answer the discussion questions within the Mystery on your blank paper. We will do the activity tomorrow, so you can stop there; at the slide that says “air.”

https://mysteryscience.com/ecosystems/mystery-2/plant-needs-air-water/94?code=MTI2MzM1NjE&t=student

Social Studies: There were many spies used by the Continental Army and the British Army during the Revolutionary War. This Liberty’s Kids is about one of the most famous, Nathan Hale. After you have watched the video, think about what dangers spies during this time might face. Then read the Ducksters article and take the quiz. Also, think about what his famous quote means, “I regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.”

****If you did not finish the assignments named Common Sense, The Turtle & the First Fourth of July, and New York, New York on Google classroom you need to be sure you finish those and turn in. They are all part of the assignments that will be counted towards your report card.

https://www.ducksters.com/history/american_revolution/spies.php

You can watch Cincinnati Zoo Home Safaris on Facebook at 2:30 pm LIVE each day. Today we meet the aardvarks!

Now it’s time for a daily art lesson from author/illustrator Jarrett J. Krosoczka—author of Punk Farm, Lunch Lady, and Jedi Academy.

Let’s head to Antarctica to have a tour of the South Pole Station where scientists live.

Then in our just for fun read aloud let’s hear about the first man to make it all the way to the south pole.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZYHuL9QXxA

Now to keep following our theme, here is a fun penguin project you can work on if you choose.

I hope you all had a marvelous Monday! Don’t forget to spend some time with an adult learning something new like how to cook a meal or fix something or spend time playing a game or getting exercise. See you tomorrow!

Today we are working on Module 5 lesson 19. Here is the link to the video:https://gm.greatminds.org/kotg-em/knowledge-for-grade-5-em-m5-l19

Today we will do problem set numbers 1,2b, and 3 and homework numbers 1-3. Don’t forget your supplies: You will need a ruler with cm, blank paper, scissors, a set square, and your math vocabulary paper you made. We are working on drawing kites and squares. Here is another good quick video to help with these figures:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmbqpL_dPks

Science

Today, take the quiz on google classroom.

Spelling- Go to Spelling City today.  Log in using your google account. Take your practice test today. Do an activity too if you have time, and focus on any missed words.

ELA: Today you have another poem on Readworks called “Dust of Snow.” This poem has two quatrains, or two groups of four lines each.. The rhyme scheme in this poem is different from yesterday’s. Can you figure it out?

Writing: Today you will be writing a poem with two quatrains that has the same rhyme scheme as “Dust of Snow.” This doesn’t mean your words have to rhyme the words in the poem, it means your rhyme scheme or rhyme pattern needs to match today’s poem. Don’t forget about the other poetry assignments on Google Classroom and that you will need to choose one poem to share with the class at Friday’s meeting.

Spelling: You should be taking the practice test on Spelling City today. We will be having a spelling test tomorrow.

You can see it here: https://dearbornschools.org/services/dearborn-public-schools-continuity-of-learning-plan/.

We will be having a Google Meeting at 1:00 pm today! The link is at the top of my Google classroom. It is now right under the class code on the top with the flag background. The link won’t work until I start the meeting.

Students, if you are turning in an assignment on Google classroom that was assigned 3/16 – 4/17, please email me that you have turned it in. (This DOES NOT apply to students who are up to date with assignments.) Google classroom doesn’t notify me when you hand it in. This is not necessary for current assignments that were made this week, 4/20 – 4/24. The most important thing right now is to start completing the work from April 20 through the rest of the year.

Let’s start our Wednesday with a Knick Knacky Knocky Knoo!

Writing: Notice in “Casey at the Bat,” the poem is written in groups of four sentences or stanzas. Each group or stanza is called a quatrain. Also notice that the first two lines rhyme at the end and the last two lines rhyme at the end. In an assignment on Google Classroom, you try writing a poem with four lines, in which the first two rhyme and the second two rhyme.

Let’s start our day with a little ninja training!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4u42yQmvpI

Math

Reminders: When working on math, complete the concept development, the first video, part 1. Then, after your other work is completed, you can do the second and third short videos for fluency and the application problem. I recommend fitting these in at some point this week as a review of what we have done in the unit so far, so it stays fresh for the end of the unit review. Continue to keep up with Zearn as well, lessons 16-19. Fridays there will not be new math, so you can use that day for these activities if needed.

This week we are working on Geometry. You will need a ruler with cm, blank paper, scissors, and a set square. A set square is just another piece of paper or cardboard that has a right angle- 90 degrees. You can make one by tracing and cutting out a circle and folding it in 4 , or using a piece of a box. You will see it on the video. Save all these materials for the rest of the week. Have a piece of paper or a notebook to take some notes of math vocabulary as you do the lesson. This will help as the week goes on. Part of the lesson does ask for you to use a protractor. This is not mandatory and the video does not have us doing those parts. Feel free to measure the angles if you have one for practice. Parent letter for Topic D: https://embarc.online/mod/url/view.php?id=1816

Today we are working on Module 5 lesson 16. We will create drawings of trapezoids. Here is the link to the video:https://gm.greatminds.org/kotg-em/knowledge-for-grade-5-em-m5-l16 Today we will do problem set numbers 1,2b,3 and 4. Problems 1a and 5 are optional if you own a protractor. You will complete homework numbers 1 and 2.

Science

Planning: I will be spacing the Mystery out over the week, a little part each day, with a quiz assignment on Thursday. If you prefer, you may pace yourself as needed, as you will have access to the whole Mystery and activity sheets for the week on Monday. I hope this gives you flexibly as needed at home.

In this week’s Mystery, students develop their thinking about the predator/prey relationships between living things. In the activity, Eat or Be Eaten, students play a card game in which they make food chains with predators and prey, and producers and consumers. The students who make the longest food chains win the game! Today, start the video and watch the exploration part. You should have your anchor phenomenon papers handy and a blank page to take notes during the Mystery this week. Answer the discussion questions within the Mystery on your blank paper. We will do the activity tomorrow, so you can stop there. https://mysteryscience.com/ecosystems/mystery-1/food-chains-predators-herbivores-carnivores/119?r=12633561#

ELA: Reading: We will be reading and writing poetry this week. April is poetry month so there is an assignment on Readworks, “Spring Into Poetry” that is due tomorrow on three different types of poetry . Also, since Wednesday April 22 is Earth Day, there is an article of the day assignment on Readworks. The five articles should be done by the end of the day on Friday. If you want extra credit points you can do the Boost Articles or the Challenge Articles. Don’t forget that when you write in your Book of Knowledge you should be writing two or three facts from the article in complete and correct sentences. Also, do not copy and paste.

Spelling: Don’t forget to go on Spelling City each day. You now have assignments and a final test assigned.

Social Studies: After the British were defeated and left Boston, they went to New York City to take it over instead. They sat in the harbor and kept ships from coming in so the people of New York City were unable to get supplies. Most Patriots left the city and hundreds of Loyalists came to New York City looking for protection. Let’s find out how the Patriots tried to get the British to leave New York City.

***If you have not completed the Readworks assignment, The American Revolutionary War, you need to do that this week!

Just For Fun!!!!!!!!

You can join the Cincinnati Zoo for a Home Safari on Facebook everyday at 2:30. Today we are visiting with the Okapi!

Since you have a snack let’s listen to our just for fun read aloud!

Remember that you have the gift of being home with your family and try to do something fun with whoever you are at home with. Have an adult teach you to cook something or fix something. Create something by drawing, painting, or just building a sculpture out of stuff that you have around the house. Write a poem, a story, an informational article, or a journal.
