5/8

We will attempt to have a meeting using Big Blue Button which is through iLearn at 1:00 today. Please bring your poetry to share. You will go to our iLearn course and will go to the heading Live Meeting. Then you will click on the date, 5/8, and will join the meeting. You will want to join with your microphone. If you join without it you will not be able to turn it on during the meeting to share. If all goes well, I will see you all at 1:00!

Students, if you are turning in an assignment on Google classroom that was assigned 4/27 – 5/1 please email me that you have turned it in. (This DOES NOT apply to students who are up to date with assignments.) Google classroom doesn’t notify me when you hand it in. This is not necessary for current assignments that were made this week 5/4 – 5/8.  I will not be accepting work from the week of 4/20 unless there is a health or technology issue that you contact me about.

Also, some assignments are created by me and some are created by Mrs. Stetz. You should be doing all of them. This is similar to what we did in school but you might not have been aware of it.

************Don’t forget that Mrs. Baloga, Mr. Harvey, Mr. Goeke, Mrs Ackerman, Mrs. Poisson, and Mr. Kwiecien have assignments on Google classroom for you to work on.************

Happy Friday! Let’s get your brain and body awake and ready for the day!

Answers from yesterday’s math homework 6.3 https://embarc.online/mod/page/view.php?id=633

Apparently the Embarc site is down right now. Here are the answers to yesterday’s homework. Just do the best you can on today’s work or wait until the site is back up.

Today we are working on Module 6 lesson 4 . Here is the link to the video:https://gm.greatminds.org/kotg-em/knowledge-for-grade-5-em-m6-l4?hsLang=en-us

Today the problem set is a game. You will need an opponent and they may want to watch the video with you to see how to play the game. It is coordinate plane Battleship. You should pick someone at least 3rd grade or above to play so they understand the concepts. The homework is another game and 3 questions. Play this with another openet if you have one, or have a rematch with your first opponent. Then answer the questions. If you don’t have time today, do tomorrow or over the weekend. If you are able, and your parents say it is okay, you can play on the computer or Facetime with a classmate that has the materials as well.

Science

Today you will take the Mystery 3 quiz in Google Classroom. Please complete this by Friday at 2 p.m. if at all possible. Don’t forget to check your experiment today and write down your observations on your data activity sheet!

ELA: You have a new fiction selection on Readworks called “What’s for Breakfast?” If you have not finished “Ice Harvest” or “Walk the Plank” from Tuesday and Wednesday you can finish those as well. Then do some work on Raz Kids. Choose a fiction book on Raz Kids. Read it and take the quiz. IF for some reason it will not let you take the quiz, you read the book too fast. Read the whole thing or listen again. Then take the quiz. I will see your results on my screen. Write a reflection using the journal tab after you have read the book. You choose the type of reflection such as your favorite character and why, identify the climax of the story, identify the theme, how did the character change throughout the story.

********* If you have not yet taken the placement assessment on Raz Kids, please do that today. There are four of you who need to get this done today! Here are the directions from Monday in case you need them.We will be using a new resource for reading periodically. Some of you may be familiar, it is Raz Kids(Learning A-Z.) They are offering free usage until the end of the year, so we are going to take advantage. RAZ Kids Login Instructions are below. Step 1: Go to http://www.kidsa-z.com Step 2: Choose the teacher’s username, hicksol Step 3: Your child finds his or her username on the class chart  Step 4: Your child enters his or her password, it is the same as your school password- your birthday 2 digits for day, 2 for month, 4 for year i.e.: 08012009 Today, Scroll down and click on the  orange circle to complete the Reading Level Placement tool.  Read and answer all the questions.  This will be used to select the book level this program sees fit, based on the questions answered in the placement tool.  It is not necessarily where your child was when I last tested them in January and will not be used for a grade.  Kids should try their best on the placement tool however to get the best matched books for them.  The tool is 1-3 short passages with about 5 questions.  Each child will be different.  Tip: To get back to the book list, go to Reading at the top and click Level Up. Your participation on Raz Kids will be used as part of your marking period 4 grades for reading.

Spelling: Don’t forget you have daily assignments on Spelling City. Please be sure you are getting those done. If you haven’t done it yet this week, please use today to get caught up. You should be taking the practice test today and your spelling test tomorrow.

Social Studies: Today is a good day to get caught up on anything you haven’t finished. Check Google Classroom to be sure you are current on all SS assignments. There will be a new video and Google Classroom assignment tomorrow.

Fifth grade students will need the ability to print the LEARN book pages at home OR will need to pick up a book!!! The work in this module is nearly impossible to complete without a printed page. This is the only chance you will have to pick up a book. If you have an issue, please contact Mrs. Hickson or Ms. Tiba as soon as possible.

Dear Parents,

This week we will be offering a pick-up of some instructional material your child’s teacher has prepared.  The prepared material will vary from class to class and your child’s teacher will let you know what you will need to pick up, if anything. To avoid large crowds and provide an opportunity for families with multiple children, the pick up will happen based on the first letter of your last name.

On Tuesday, May 5 from 1-3 pm, the pick-up will be for families whose last name starts with the letter A-M.  And on Wednesday, May 6 from 1-3 pm, will be for families whose last name starts with N-Z.  The materials will be set up on the South playground (where K-2 lineup).

The material will be placed on carts by grade level and teacher name. We ask that parents come alone with a mask, stand in line until they are asked to come forward and collect their children’s materials from the carts.  We kindly request that you just grab the top book and do not shuffle through them and as always practice safe distancing.  There will be cones and tape on the floor to also help guide the flow.

If you have any questions, please let us know.

Stay safe,

Ms. Tiba

Do you know what kinds of animals live in Australia? They’re pretty different from the animals in the rest of the world. Kangaroos, Koalas, Wallabies, Wombats, Quokkas, Tasmanian Devils…these are MARSUPIALS. That’s a special kind of mammal that is born very small and underdeveloped. They crawl into their mother’s pouch and finish growing to full size there! Then there are even odder mammals called monotremes. These mammals actually LAY EGGS. There are two kinds of monotremes that live in Australia: the duck-billed platypus, and the echidna (also known as the spiny anteater). Finally, there are some very large flightless birds in Australia: the emu and the cassowary. They’re HUGE! In this video, you’ll learn more about each of these interesting animals like what they eat and how they have families.

Now let’s hear another just for fun read aloud from Australia!

WILD ART

Be inspired by the screech owl’s colors, shapes and texture…fluffy feathers and all! Use whatever supplies you have available to re-create a screech owl at home! Do the feathers on its head look the same as on its wing? How does its beak compare to its feet? Try getting it  just right, and then try making other silly versions of the screech owl out of your pure imagination. Looking for more to add to your creation? How about making it hunt for a mouse or snuggling up in a tree? What supplies do you have at home that could really show off its texture (cotton balls, leaves, tissue paper)?

We want to see your masterpieces, so please upload your artwork to Instagram or Twitter using #ZooHomeSafari, post it in the comments of our Facebook Live Video, or email it to homesafari@cincinnatizoo.org.  We may share your amazing artwork on our Facebook/Instagram stories and our website.

Now it’s time for a daily art lesson from author/illustrator Jarrett J. Krosoczka—author of Punk Farm, Lunch Lady, and Jedi Academy.

Planning: I will be spacing the Mystery out over the week, a little part each day, with a quiz assignment on Thursday. If you prefer, you may pace yourself as needed, as you will have access to the whole Mystery and activity sheets for the week on Monday. I hope this gives you flexibility as needed at home.

In this week’s Mystery 3, students discover the role fungi play in decomposing dead materials and in creating soil. In the activity, Mold Terrarium, students plan and conduct an investigation to discover the factors affecting decomposition. Students fill Ziploc bags with a piece of fruit, orange and banana are suggested but any will do, a piece of cheese and a piece of bread and change environmental conditions to study how different variables affect mold growth. Today, start the video and watch the exploration part. You should have your anchor phenomenon papers handy and a blank page to take notes during the Mystery this week. Answer the discussion questions within the Mystery on your blank paper. We will be using a new resource for reading periodically.

* Access resources on mobile devices by downloading the Kids A-Z app from the app store. Data rates may apply.

Spelling: There is a new list and new activities on Spelling City. You will need to take the test on Friday.

Social Studies: Ben Franklin is in Paris, France for a very important reason. The Americans need support!

Join the Cincinnati Zoo for a Home Safari Facebook Live each day at 3pm EDT where they will highlight one of their amazing animals!!!!

Now it’s time for a daily art lesson from author/illustrator Jarrett J. Krosoczka—author of Punk Farm, Lunch Lady, and Jedi Academy.

This week we are going to visit Australia!

Our read aloud today is Koala Lou!

Calling all parents!!!

Hello 5th Grade parents,

Even though school is closed for the remainder of the school year, we are still going to make the 5th Grade video and will figure out a way to get it to everyone when it is safe.

So that each 5th grader is included in the video, we need EVERYONE to send in photos of your 5th grader.

These photos can be from kindergarten all the way through 5th grade.  They can include: photos of just your 5th grader, photos with their classmates or teachers, photos from field trips, photos from any school clubs they belong to (i.e. scouts, band, etc.), and photos from the various Lindbergh functions – anything having to do with Lindbergh.  Pictures that are sent in that did not take place at school or during a school event will not be used.

Please email the photos to:

FlyersClassOf2020@gmail.com

END DATE TO SEND IN PHOTOS IS MAY 15TH!!!

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Stacey Krol (734-751-1658).  Thank you!

5/1

Good Morning, happy Friday and Happy May! Below are the assignments for today. Ask questions in google classroom email if you have any! Here is a link to a calendar to print for a general overview of how our week runs. It is nothing new. It may be helpful to print for your own organization. You will continue to get lesson specific links on here. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1FquGEr0Zx-TNQn1R-CRJyGJ5VAt2I-WPhRL6cFVrh3s/edit?usp=sharing

Dear Parents,

I hope you and your family are safe and healthy. Friday we completed the first week of our new Continuity plan guidelines and I am seeking your feedback. Below is a short survey to help us better understand the needs of the community as a whole. The collected results will allow us to make some well-informed decisions moving forward. It is anonymous and greatly appreciated.

Google Meet: Our Google Meets for this week have been canceled as due to a temporary issue the district has asked us to refrain from having live meetings until further notice. I will be training on a new platform for meetings on Thursday morning. I will update you as to the status of the meetings. This week I will be recording sessions for you and attaching them to the student’s email. Please see the memo from the superintendent regarding this matter. We will be switching to a new platform for the live meetings only, which will take a short while to learn and prepare. In the meantime, please watch the recorded lessons and email and ask questions. I am here to help. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1XRPvpmUYfCR_sRq14PSTYoyatM8n2SiccuMqG2ZwzC0/edit?usp=sharing

The district has had the Continuity of Learning Plan approved. It is important for parents/guardians to read it so you will know how things have changed since we first began remote learning. If you go to the elementary section it explains how grades will be done and what is expected of students for the rest of the year. You can see it here: https://dearbornschools.org/services/dearborn-public-schools-continuity-of-learning-plan/.

Students, if you are turning in an assignment on Google classroom that was assigned 4/20 – 4/24 please email me that you have turned it in. (This DOES NOT apply to students who are up to date with assignments.) Google classroom doesn’t notify me when you hand it in. This is not necessary for current assignments that were made this week, 4/27 – 5/1. The most important thing right now is to start completing the work from April 20 through the rest of the year. I will not be accepting work from the week of 4/20 after Friday 5/1 so please make sure you have it done before then unless there is a health or technology issue that you contact me about.

Also, some assignments are created by me and some are created by Mrs. Stetz. You should be doing all of them. This is similar to what we did in school but you might not have been aware of it.

*********************Don’t forget that Mrs. Baloga, Mr. Harvey, Mr. Goeke, Mrs Ackerman, Mrs. Poisson, and Mr. Kwiecien have assignments on Google classroom for you to work on. Watch for Google meetings with these teachers!!************

I’ll think I’ll have a milkshake for breakfast!

Math: If you have not completed the Module 5 test in Google Classroom, please complete it today by 3. If you are all done, complete Zearn through the end of Module 5.

Science: There is no new science today. If you are not done with any of the assignments on Google Classroom, today is your day to get caught up. If you have not completed the Mystery 2 quiz in Google Classroom, please complete it today by 2. If you have not completed the Readworks article: The Plant Puzzle, you need to finish that as well. When you are done, here are some fun science videos with our friend at Crash Course Kids.

ELA: Complete any Scholastic News, Readworks, and old ELA assignments in google classroom today. This is you day to catch up if you need it.

Spelling: You have a spelling test to take on Spelling City. This is a required part of your grade. If you haven’t done all the activities you will need to do those as well. Today is your day to get caught up!

Social Studies: The Continental Army was not doing well. They had lost almost every battle and the colonists and soldiers were very discouraged and ready to quit the fight for freedom. Then Washington had a fabulous plan to change things. Watch the video and read the Ducksters article to find out more. Then go to Google Classroom and do the assignment. If you need to, go back and watch Wednesday’s and today’s videos and reread the articles so your answers will be correct. Don’t forget to click turn in.

Click here for the Ducksters article: https://www.ducksters.com/history/crossing_the_delaware.php

There is a link in your morning email to a video of me reading the book, “Can’t You Make Them Behave King George?”

TURACO BEAK

Zulu has a beautifully bright, colorful beak. What sorts of colorful food do you think she would eat while hopping from branch to branch in the canopy of the rainforest? Now we’d like for you to dress up like Zulu by creating, decorating and wearing your own turaco beak! Take a toilet tube or piece of scrap paper and fold it in or cut it on one side to fit comfortably against your face. Cut or fold in the opposite side to create a pointed shape. Decorate it bright yellow with a hint of red at the top. Your finished beak will pair nicely with the crown that you may have made a few weeks ago after watching our Home Safari on our Lady Ross’ turaco chick. Wear your crown and beak and hop around like Zulu.

Now it’s time for a daily art lesson from author/illustrator Jarrett J. Krosoczka—author of Punk Farm, Lunch Lady, and Jedi Academy.

While we are talking about Tomie dePaola, let’s have a fun read aloud of Strega Nona! This is one of my favorite picture books!

Let’s get some fun facts about Antarctica!

If you have time, this DSO Watch Party would be fun!

Math

Today we are working on the Module 5 unit test. Please go to google classroom and take the assessment. You can print it and do it on paper, but you must put your answers in. If you are able, I would like to see your work. If you can attach it to the google assignment or take a picture and email it to me I would appreciate it. I will not be able to grade your test unless you type your answers onto the Google Classroom assignment and hit turn in on the assignment. Please do that. Please complete this on your own by tomorrow at 3. I want to get them checked and back to you as soon as possible.

You can use these videos to review two different methods for multiplying mixed numbers.
