Math

Today we are working on Module 6 lesson 9. Here is the link to the video:https://gm.greatminds.org/kotg-em/knowledge-for-grade-5-em-m6-l9?hsLang=en-us

Today we will do problem set numbers 1 a-c, 2 a-c and homework numbers 1 a-c, 2 a-c.

Science

Planning: I will be spacing the Mystery out over the week, a little part each day, with a quiz assignment on Thursday. If you prefer, you may pace yourself as needed, as you will have access to the whole Mystery and activity sheets for the week on Monday. I hope this gives you flexibility as needed at home.

In this week’s Mystery 5, students combine what they have learned about plants, animals, and decomposers to see how they interact in an ecosystem. In the activity, Pond Ecosystem Game, students first build a pond ecosystem that will support a sunfish. To succeed, they must make sure that carbon dioxide levels are healthy for both plants and animals. (This is a game played on paper.) Then, students play a game called Big Fish where they compete to make a healthy ecosystem for a sunfish. Today, start the video and watch the exploration part. You should have your anchor phenomenon papers handy and a blank page to take notes during the Mystery this week. Answer the discussion questions within the Mystery on your blank paper and sketch a model of the interactions in a pond ecosystem during today’s video. We will do the activity tomorrow, so you can stop there; at the slide that says activity. Here is the link: https://mysteryscience.com/ecosystems/mystery-5/ecosystems-matter-cycle/216?code=MTI2MzM1NjE&t=student

ELA: We will be talking about theme in a story or book this week. Theme is to fiction what main idea is to non fiction. The theme of a piece is the main message that the author is trying to teach through their writing. We will have a Readworks assignment today called The Wise Choice. Please watch the videos below before you start the Readworks assignment. They will help you understand better what we mean when we say theme.

Social Studies: Britain had what was considered the best Navy in the world during the time period of the American Revolution. They ruled the coasts at the beginning of the war. When France entered in support of the Americans, they had many ships which they gave to American captains so they could fight the British. The Americans started winning sea battles against the British. One of those American captains is John Paul Jones. He is called Father of the American Navy. Watch today’s video to find out more! Then go to Google classroom and do the “Not Yet Begun to Fight” section of the assignment.

When the American Revolution started, many tribes sided with the British because they thought this was the only way to keep people off their land. The Americans came in and built forts so they could be ready for battles with the British. How do you think the Native Americans felt about this? Watch this episode to find out! Of course there were issues! Also, the American Army continues to fight and this episode shows us the Battle of Monmouth. Watch the video to find out what happens. Then go to Google Classroom to answer the questions dealing with today’s video. I have given you the videos and questions for today’s and Friday’s assignments. You can choose when you will do these. They are due on Monday so you can do each part separately without turning in until you are completely done or do both videos today. You could also do both on Thursday or Friday to give you time to get caught up with other things. Just so you are done with the entire assignment on Monday it doesn’t matter when you do it.

You will need the pages from the assignment, 2 worms, a paper plate, paper towels, water, a dark piece of paper, and a pencil.  The pages for the activity are on the Google Classroom assignment labeled Mystery 4. You will need to print them out. If you don’t have a printer, watch the video and look through the pages. If you do not have access to these materials, don’ t worry.  You can print or look at the pages and watch Doug do it.  This is a 2 part activity. If you got worms, you should do both parts at the same time so they can go back outside when you are done. You should have your anchor phenomenon papers handy and a blank page to take notes if you need it. Stop at step 15 of part 2, We will do the wrap up and anchoring phenomenon connection tomorrow. Students, if you are turning in an assignment on Google classroom that was assigned 5/4 – 5/8 please email me that you have turned it in. This is not necessary for current assignments that were made this week 5/11 – 5/15.  I will not be accepting work from the weeks of 4/20 and 4/27 unless there is a health or technology issue that you contact me about.

Also, some assignments are created by me and some are created by Mrs. Stetz. You should be doing all of them. This is similar to what we did in school but you might not have been aware of it.

************Don’t forget that Mrs. Baloga, Mr. Harvey, Mr. Goeke, Mrs Ackerman, Mrs. Poisson, and Mr. Kwiecien have assignments on Google classroom for you to work on.************

Math

Today we are working on Module 6 lesson 5. Here is the link to the video:https://gm.greatminds.org/kotg-em/knowledge-for-grade-5-em-m6-l5?hsLang=en-us

Today we will do problem set numbers 1a-f, 2a-d, 7 and homework numbers 1 a-f, 2a-d

In this week’s Mystery 4, In this Mystery, students discover the critical role earthworms play in decomposing dead material and releasing nutrients into the soil. During a two-part activity, Ask a Worm, students observe earthworms and then design their own “fair test” investigations of earthworm behavior. Students first make close observations of worms. Then, students conduct a simple experiment with multiple trials to figure out if worms prefer dry or wet areas. They consider what a “fair test” is and design an experiment to answer other questions about worms. Today, start the video and watch the exploration part. You should have your anchor phenomenon papers handy and a blank page to take notes during the Mystery this week. Answer the discussion questions within the Mystery on your blank paper. We will do the activity tomorrow, so you can stop there; at the slide that says *https://mysteryscience.com/ecosystems/mystery-4/decomposers-nutrients-matter-cycle/215?code=MTI2MzM1NjE&t=student

**You will need earth worms this week to complete the experiments. If you can find 1 or 2 in your backyard that would be ideal. If not, you can watch Doug’s worms.

ELA: This week we will work through the current issue of Scholastic News, Sky’s The Limit. Just like before, we are going to the Scholastic News site and logging in with our google account. Here is the link:https://classroommagazines.scholastic.com/ For today and tomorrow read the articles, Reaching New Heights, Super Soaker, and Furry Friends. Watch the videos as well. Complete the assignment on Google Classroom titled Scholastic News 5-11 Part 1 and hit turn in. Also, don’t forget that the read aloud of Chapter Two of A Bad Beginning is on Google Classroom.

Spelling: You have a new list on Spelling City with lots of fun activities and a test on Friday. Remember, this is a required part of your ELA grade.

Writing: Think about a superpower you would like to have. A superpower could be flying, invisibility, super speed, super strength, being bulletproof, controlling the weather etc. Why would you like that super power? How would you use it? Please complete the writing assignment, My Superpower, on Google Classroom correctly and completely. (Remember that a superpower does NOT involve a weapon. Please do not include weapons in your writing.)

Social Studies: Valley Forge was an important place during the course of the American Revolution. It was where the Continental Army set up camp during the harsh winter of 1777–78. Watch the videos and read the article to find out what happened there.
