Mrs. Hickson's Class

Dearborn Public Schools

Important notice for the fifth grade parents!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your fifth grader will be bringing home a note regarding Human Growth and Development today. I will be personally handing each of them the note. Please read the note and send it back signed if you DO NOT wish for your child to participate. If the school does not receive a signed note from you then your child will be participating in the program.

****If you do not want your child to participate please send the note back signed but it also might be a good idea to send me an email just to make sure I am aware that they should not be participating.

*********The students will be separated into a girl group and a boy group for the lessons. The fourth graders will NOT be present for any of the lessons nor will they have access to any of the materials.

7 Habits posters.

Don’t forget to finish up your 7 habits poster that was sent home May 3rd.
Here are the directions for you just in case you can’t find them. Also, if you do not know what you did with your poster, please just use an 8″ x 11″ plain white piece of construction paper.
I can’t wait to see all the great posters decorate our lockers with the habits!!!

We are preparing for our Lindbergh School Leadership day on June 2, 2016. We are asking that each family choose one of the 7 habits and create a locker poster with words and pictures describing how that habit impacts your family.

We are providing the paper for your family. Please make sure that your poster is created portrait not landscape (vertical not horizontal). Please see example below.

Each Lindbergh family is being asked to create one poster per Lindbergh student in the family. If you have more than 1 Lindbergh student in your family, the family may focus on one habit or the family can use a different habit on each child’s poster to display. For example, if you have 3 children at Lindbergh that means 3 posters will be turned in with a habit of choice on it.

Completed posters are due Tues May 31, 2016. This is your chance to show the creativity of your family. Please don’t hesitate to use different kinds of materials, glitter, colorful markers, stickers and more.

Here is a list of Habits for you to choose from

Be Proactive
Begin with the End in Mind
Put First Things First
Think Win-Win
Seek First to Understand then to Be Understood
Synergize
Sharpen the Saw

Camp, NWEA, M-Step, ETC.

‘Twas the eve before camp….
Can’t wait to get going tomorrow morning!! Remember it is late start. Show up, drop your labeled luggage in the cafe, and get in line at our regular late start time. We will be leaving at 9:45.
Check the packing list to make sure you have everything. Get plenty of rest tonight and eat a good breakfast…tomorrow is going to be a busy day!!!

NWEAs are done!!!!! The last students with make-up tests finished them. I will be printing off your scores and giving them to you on Monday.

Fourth graders-
M-Step….You are scheduled to take M-Steps tomorrow. You will be joining Ms. Knaus’ class for testing and will be with my substitute and any fifth graders not going to camp in room 204 the rest of the day. Some of our special classes may end up being rescheduled but I know you will have no problem being flexible. I have left complete 4th grade lesson plans for the substitute so you will have plenty to do and will not miss a beat in the fourth grade curriculum while I’m gone.

***I know our job chart will be a problem while we are gone, but I also know you are all great leaders and will step up and help the substitute keep the class running smoothly.

**Don’t forget…you will be eating lunch and having recess with the other fourth grade classes Wed. – Fri. (12:00 – 12:30)

Our classroom is scheduled to have the windows replaced this Friday. I’m crossing my fingers that everything stays on schedule. I don’t know where the class will be on this day but it will all work out. I will stop in when we get back from camp to see how everything is going.

Have a great three days and good luck on your M-Step testing. You are ready!! Just relax and do your personal best!!

This Week….

Fifth grade-

I am so excited for camp and I hope you are too. Don’t forget to follow the packing list I sent home. If you have any questions please ask tomorrow so you have time to get what you need.

**Some parents have been asking about sending snacks. The students should not be bringing individual snacks but if you wish to get some for the group please keep in mind that we have 41 5th graders going. Also, if you do send something please send fruit like apples or cuties. We have many food allergies and restrictions in our group and don’t want anyone to feel left out. We will only be gone for two and a half days so we really don’t need much. The camp actually supplies plenty of food so don’t feel obligated to send anything.

****We do need bottled water for camp. Please send the smaller bottles to help control waste. Label them “Fifth grade camp” and drop them off in the cafeteria.

*********Don’t forget that the full band and strings will be meeting tomorrow due to camp. Don’t forget your instruments!

Fourth grade-

You will be taking the M-Step this week…I know…it hardly seems fair.
You will be taking the test with Ms. Knaus’ class but will be in the room with me (tomorrow) or my substitute the rest of the day.
I am leaving three full days of lesson plans for my substitute so you will have plenty to keep you busy!!
Make sure you get plenty of rest each night and eat a healthy, brain building breakfast each morning so you can do your best!!
If you have any questions please ask tomorrow because I will be gone Wed. – Fri. at camp and will not have a computer.

M-Step Schedule
5/10- ELA Day 1
5/11- ELA Day 2
5/17- Math Day 1
5/18- Math Day 2
5/19- Science Day 1

Fourth Grade Math

Remember when you are doing your word problems from today that it is very important that you first figure out what the question you need to answer is. Then make sure you are getting rid of all unimportant information…there will be information that you don’t need in the problems. Cross out the unnecessary info. Once you figure out the question, and get rid of the information that is “extra” you need to figure out what operation or operations to do in order to answer the question. Make sure your answer makes sense and is answering the question. Talk to your parents about the problems if you need to. We will be going over your math journal problems from today one by one tomorrow to practice the directions above and then will do more word problems on the board. If you don’t understand a certain problem just skip it and we will discuss it tomorrow.

Here is a link to more M-Step practice problems:

Moby Max and Prep Dog also have practice word problems you can try.
