on May 18, 2020

Happy Monday!!! It is time to start our almost summer countdown!! After today we only have 16 days of school left!!! You are almost done with fifth grade! We are all going to try really hard to finish strong!

We will be having a Big Blue Button meeting tomorrow at 1:00. Big Blue Button can be accessed through our class iLearn. Don’t forget that as a part of the meeting we will discuss theme in literature and social studies. We will also have a meeting on Thursday at 1:00 because there is no school on Friday or Monday.

Students, if you are turning in an assignment on Google classroom that was assigned 5/4 – 5/15 please email me that you have turned it in. (This DOES NOT apply to students who are up to date with assignments.) Google classroom doesn’t notify me when you hand it in. This is not necessary for current assignments that were made this week 5/18 – 5/21.  I will not be accepting work from the weeks of 4/20 and 4/27 unless there is a health or technology issue that you contact me about.

************Don’t forget that Mrs. Baloga, Mr. Harvey, Mr. Goeke, Mrs Ackerman, Mrs. Poisson, and Mr. Kwiecien have assignments on Google classroom for you to work on.************

Get moving!!!

Science

Planning: I will be spacing the Mystery out over the week, a little part each day, with a quiz assignment on Thursday. If you prefer, you may pace yourself as needed, as you will have access to the whole Mystery and activity sheets for the week on Monday. I hope this gives you flexibility as needed at home.

In this week’s Mystery 5, students combine what they have learned about plants, animals, and decomposers to see how they interact in an ecosystem. In the activity, Pond Ecosystem Game, students first build a pond ecosystem that will support a sunfish. To succeed, they must make sure that carbon dioxide levels are healthy for both plants and animals. (This is a game played on paper.) Then, students play a game called Big Fish where they compete to make a healthy ecosystem for a sunfish. Today, start the video and watch the exploration part. You should have your anchor phenomenon papers handy and a blank page to take notes during the Mystery this week. Answer the discussion questions within the Mystery on your blank paper and sketch a model of the interactions in a pond ecosystem during today’s video. We will do the activity tomorrow, so you can stop there; at the slide that says activity. ELA: We will be talking about theme in a story or book this week. Theme is to fiction what main idea is to non fiction. The theme of a piece is the main message that the author is trying to teach through their writing. We will have a Readworks assignment today called The Wise Choice. Please watch the videos below before you start the Readworks assignment. They will help you understand better what we mean when we say theme.

Social Studies: Britain had what was considered the best Navy in the world during the time period of the American Revolution. They ruled the coasts at the beginning of the war. When France entered in support of the Americans, they had many ships which they gave to American captains so they could fight the British. The Americans started winning sea battles against the British. One of those American captains is John Paul Jones. He is called Father of the American Navy. Watch today’s video to find out more! Then go to Google classroom and do the “Not Yet Begun to Fight” section of the assignment.
