Mrs. Hickson's Class

Dearborn Public Schools

5/11

on May 11, 2020

Students, if you are turning in an assignment on Google classroom that was assigned 5/4 – 5/8 please email me that you have turned it in. (This DOES NOT apply to students who are up to date with assignments.) Google classroom doesn’t notify me when you hand it in. This is not necessary for current assignments that were made this week 5/11 – 5/15.  I will not be accepting work from the weeks of 4/20 and 4/27 unless there is a health or technology issue that you contact me about.

Also, some assignments are created by me and some are created by Mrs. Stetz. You should be doing all of them. This is similar to what we did in school but you might not have been aware of it.

************Don’t forget that Mrs. Baloga, Mr. Harvey, Mr. Goeke, Mrs Ackerman, Mrs. Poisson, and Mr. Kwiecien have assignments on Google classroom for you to work on.************

Math

Today we are working on Module 6 lesson 5. Here is the link to the video:https://gm.greatminds.org/kotg-em/knowledge-for-grade-5-em-m6-l5?hsLang=en-us

Science

Planning: I will be spacing the Mystery out over the week, a little part each day, with a quiz assignment on Thursday. If you prefer, you may pace yourself as needed, as you will have access to the whole Mystery and activity sheets for the week on Monday. I hope this gives you flexibility as needed at home.

In this week’s Mystery 4, In this Mystery, students discover the critical role earthworms play in decomposing dead material and releasing nutrients into the soil. During a two-part activity, Ask a Worm, students observe earthworms and then design their own “fair test” investigations of earthworm behavior. Students first make close observations of worms. Then, students conduct a simple experiment with multiple trials to figure out if worms prefer dry or wet areas. They consider what a “fair test” is and design an experiment to answer other questions about worms. Today, start the video and watch the exploration part. You should have your anchor phenomenon papers handy and a blank page to take notes during the Mystery this week. Answer the discussion questions within the Mystery on your blank paper. We will do the activity tomorrow, so you can stop there; at the slide that says *https://mysteryscience.com/ecosystems/mystery-4/decomposers-nutrients-matter-cycle/215?code=MTI2MzM1NjE&t=student

**You will need earth worms this week to complete the experiments. If you can find 1 or 2 in your backyard that would be ideal. If not, you can watch Doug’s worms.

ELA: This week we will work through the current issue of Scholastic News, Sky’s The Limit. Just like before, we are going to the Scholastic News site and logging in with our google account. Here is the link:https://classroommagazines.scholastic.com/ For today and tomorrow read the articles, Reaching New Heights, Super Soaker, and Furry Friends. Watch the videos as well. Complete the assignment on Google Classroom titled Scholastic News 5-11 Part 1 and hit turn in. Also, don’t forget that the read aloud of Chapter Two of A Bad Beginning is on Google Classroom.

Spelling: You have a new list on Spelling City with lots of fun activities and a test on Friday. Remember, this is a required part of your ELA grade.

Writing: Think about a superpower you would like to have. A superpower could be flying, invisibility, super speed, super strength, being bulletproof, controlling the weather etc. Why would you like that super power? How would you use it? Please complete the writing assignment, My Superpower, on Google Classroom correctly and completely. (Remember that a superpower does NOT involve a weapon. Please do not include weapons in your writing.)

Social Studies: Valley Forge was an important place during the course of the American Revolution. It was where the Continental Army set up camp during the harsh winter of 1777–78. Watch the videos and read the article to find out what happened there.
