Mrs. Hickson's Class

Dearborn Public Schools

5/4

on May 4, 2020

Students, if you are turning in an assignment on Google classroom that was assigned 4/27 – 5/1 please email me that you have turned it in. (This DOES NOT apply to students who are up to date with assignments.) Google classroom doesn’t notify me when you hand it in. This is not necessary for current assignments that were made this week 5/4 – 5/8.  I will not be accepting work from the week of 4/20 unless there is a health or technology issue that you contact me about.

Also, some assignments are created by me and some are created by Mrs. Stetz. You should be doing all of them. This is similar to what we did in school but you might not have been aware of it.

*********************Don’t forget that Mrs. Baloga, Mr. Harvey, Mr. Goeke, Mrs Ackerman, Mrs. Poisson, and Mr. Kwiecien have assignments on Google classroom for you to work on. Watch for Google meetings with these teachers!!************

Math

Today we will begin working on Module 6 lesson 1. Here is the link to the video:https://gm.greatminds.org/kotg-em/knowledge-for-grade-5-em-m6-l1?hsLang=en-us This Module is problem solving and coordinate planees, one of my favorite, and very different from Module 5. Remember to keep up on all the skills from previous modules by doing the fluency videos when you can.

Today we will do problem set numbers 1 a-d, 2a-c, 3a-c, 4 and homework numbers 1 a-c, 2, 3a-d. I know you do not have your books yet. I am hoping the will be available at school Tuesday or Wednesday for someone to go and pick up for you. (More information a.s.a.p.) These pages are preferred to print or to go get with this unit for the gird paper needed, or it will be very difficult to complete. You can print right from the lesson until you get the book if you can. Under the lesson it says student materials. Click there and you can print the problem set. If yo no not have a printer, try it on paper looking at the problem set until you go get your module 6 journal. You can do the homework because you have that book.

Planning: I will be spacing the Mystery out over the week, a little part each day, with a quiz assignment on Thursday. If you prefer, you may pace yourself as needed, as you will have access to the whole Mystery and activity sheets for the week on Monday. I hope this gives you flexibility as needed at home.

In this week’s Mystery 3, students discover the role fungi play in decomposing dead materials and in creating soil. In the activity, Mold Terrarium, students plan and conduct an investigation to discover the factors affecting decomposition. Students fill Ziploc bags with a piece of fruit, orange and banana are suggested but any will do, a piece of cheese and a piece of bread and change environmental conditions to study how different variables affect mold growth. Today, start the video and watch the exploration part. You should have your anchor phenomenon papers handy and a blank page to take notes during the Mystery this week. Answer the discussion questions within the Mystery on your blank paper. We will do the activity tomorrow, so you can stop there; at the slide that says activity. https://mysteryscience.com/ecosystems/mystery-3/decomposers-matter-cycle/95?code=MTI2MzM1NjE&t=student

ELA

We will be using a new resource for reading periodically. Some of you may be familiar, it is Raz Kids(Learning A-Z.) They are offering free usage until the end of the year, so we are going to take advantage. RAZ Kids Login Instructions are below. Step 1: Go to http://www.kidsa-z.com Step 2: Choose the teacher’s username, hicksol Step 3: Your child finds his or her username on the class chart  Step 4: Your child enters his or her password, it is the same as your school password- your birthday 2 digits for day, 2 for month, 4 for year i.e.: 08012009 Today, Scroll down and click on the  orange circle to complete the Reading Level Placement tool.  Read and answer all the questions.  This will be used to select the book level this program sees fit, based on the questions answered in the placement tool.  It is not necessarily where your child was when I last tested them in January and will not be used for a grade.  Kids should try their best on the placement tool however to get the best matched books for them.  The tool is 1-3 short passages with about 5 questions.  Each child will be different.  Tip: To get back to the book list, go to Reading at the top and click Level Up.

* Access resources on mobile devices by downloading the Kids A-Z app from the app store. Data rates may apply.

Spelling: There is a new list and new activities on Spelling City. You will need to take the test on Friday.
