Recap of October 1 to October 5

Español I

Last week, students practiced their Spanish numbers, times, and dates vocabulary by reading through a Spanish calendar with Spain’s national and regional holidays. Students were also able to figure out what certain holidays were by using context clues and cognates, words that look similar and mean the same thing between the two languages. Students then had a Jeopardy review session before their quiz on Wednesday and students did very well on the vocabulary part averaging an 87% between the two classes. The interpretive part, which is understanding the main ideal and important details of authentic videos and readings was a little bit more difficult, but with practice, students will get better at this skill. Later in the week students put together a short letter writing to a character from a Spanish tv show we have watched in a couple of classes. Just after about a month, students are already able to write terrific letters in Spanish!

Last week, students learned about another Argentine food called chipá, which is one of the oldest fusion foods in Latin America, combined with elements the Spaniards brought to the New World and ingredients that the indigenous in South America had long been using. After students learned about the chipá, which is like a small cheese roll, students were then able combine their cultural knowledge, food vocabulary, and gramatical topic of commands to put together a recipe for the cheese roll. After creating this recipe, students then worked with a partner on their own recipes of a dish of their choice. This activity is pretty similar to an upcoming presentation next Thursday, that they will have with a different partner. Lastly on Tuesday of the upcoming week, students will have a vocab and interpretive (authentic reading and listening) quiz. The Monday before, students will have a Jeopardy review session.
