Math

Lately, in math class, students continue working on reviewing calculating change. Students have also started working on the concepts of patterns and rules such as repeating, growth, and decaying patterns. Students are also working with real world examples of patterns and schedules.

Language Arts

Lately, in Language Arts class, students are working on being “fearless” spellers by stretching words and sounding them out instead of asking the teacher how to spell words. On Wednesdays, students practice reading and analyzing short articles using the 5 W’s (What, Who, Where, When, Why). Students also continue to work on their memory and listening comprehension by listening to the story The Adventurer’s Guild and having class discussions about the events of the plot and writing in their journals. On Mondays and Fridays, students are continuing their work in the First Author Writing Curriculum. Currently, students are working on the concept of brainstorming topics for writing.

Job Skills

This week in job skills students collected recycling and worked at the school store. On Fridays, students are cooking a  meal together. Students are also working with money by making change and calculating totals using money manipulative.

Important Announcement: Cell phones during finals

Mr. Martin has sent out an announcement to parents and students stating that cell phones will not be permitted in the classrooms on the days of the finals, Wednesday January 16, Thursday January 17, and Friday January 18. It is important that students follow this policy to keep down distractions and to eliminate any unfortunate incidents that could occur, i.e. accusations of cheating, cell phone noises distracting during class, etc. Click here to read Mr. Martin’s letter for further information.

Math

Students have been reviewing for their final exams by writing their own story problems. These story problems will be checked over by their math teacher and then used as the questions on their final test.

Language Arts

Students have been reviewing for their finals by continuing to practice sentence corrections and ending punctuation.

Job Skills

Students will have a three part final. Yesterday, students independently ran the recycling program without any teacher input or direction. Today, students will demonstrate their knowledge of the school store. Thursday, students will be charged with planning, bringing in their own ingredients, and independently cooking a meal for themselves.

Important Announcement!

Students have been reminded that their Semester Long Life Skills Assignment is due Tuesday, January 15th, 2019. Students were expected to be working on the packet all throughout the semester before turning it in in January. If students have lost their copy of their packet another one can be found In the class links section under “Independent Living Skills Homework Assignment.” Since this is a semester long project, it is worth a lot of points. Not turning in this project will negatively affect students’ grades.

Students completed a mini-project where they planned and budgeted for a holiday party for 15 people. This included creating a shopping list, calculating prices and change, and making sure to stay in the budget of $40. Currently, students are continuing a lesson on thinking mathematically through the process of understanding and solving one and two step real world story problems.

Language Arts

Lately, in Language Arts class, students continued working on punctuation, capitalization, and basic grammar rules through bell work. On Wednesdays, students practice reading and analyzing short articles using the 5 W’s (What, Who, Where, When, Why). Students also continue to work on their memory and listening comprehension by listening to the story The Adventurer’s Guild and having class discussions about the events of the plot and writing in their journals. On Mondays and Fridays, students are continuing their work in the First Author Writing Curriculum. Currently, students are working on the concept of brainstorming topics for writing.

On Wednesday, students practice reading and analyzing short articles using the 5 W’s (What, Who, Where, When, Why). Students also continue to work on their memory and listening comprehension by listening to the story The Adventurer’s Guild and having class discussions about the events of the plot and writing in their journals.

Students read about and practiced appropriate body language for a place of employment. They finished off the week viewing two videos. One was about essential tips for good conversations, and the other was about how body language effects how we feel about ourselves.

If you have noticed your son or daughter bringing home more homework than usual, this is because we have started working on a project this week. Students have been working on a Design Your Own Haunted House packet and are charged with finishing parts they do not finish in class at home. In the packet, students are working on skills such as planning, budgeting, calculating change, and writing sentences. The entire project will be due on Halloween, October 31st.

Just a reminder that our Fall field trip to the Detroit Zoo will be on next Friday. Students will be advised to either bring money for lunch, or pack a sack lunch. Also, considering the majority of the exhibits are outside, they should also check the weather the night before so they dress accordingly.
