February 28, 2020 Mrs. Ballnik’s Classroom News     My email is ballnic@dearbornschools.org

Snow Day Surprise- I hope that everyone did their math homework (given every weekday except on Friday and the day of a test).  Reading is everyday , also.  Thank-you to parents that ask their child questions about the story that they are reading and have their child read to them (more or less depending on the kind of book that they are reading).  Happy Michigan Living!

Free Opportunity!- Mrs. Badwi in room 123 is hosting a Monday morning 7:45 a.m. – 8:20 a.m. Book Club for 2nd Graders that will begin on Monday, March 2 for the next 5 weeks.  There is a permission slip sent home today.  Please consider sending your child, if it is possible.

Math help- Try this Eureka math help and games to make your child a top math student- https://bit.ly/35QeXMc     It is also on my BLOG.   We will have an addition and subtraction test when we return.

SCIENCE – We continue to learn about bodies of water and landforms (earth science) in our unit.

SPELLING WORDS FOR NEXT WEEK ARE Plurals.   Please continue to point out the pattern of the spelling words each week and help your child discover words with these patterns in their reading.  Soon, your child will be pointing these out to you, if they do not already.  A good idea is to get a blank notebook and keep a list.  Send them in for extra credit.

The contractions to study are: benches, books, cherries, classes, crutches, drinks, families, foxes, glasses, homes, nails, noses, parties, puppies, stamps.

Social Studies– We have started our new unit, How Do Citizens Live Together in a Community?  It covers diversity and also government.  Ask your child if they know what government is.  We are also discussing what is good for the individual and what is good for all ( individual rights and the common good).

Now the question “Why do we form governments?” is being explored.  Basically, the answers are to be safe, to make laws and to solve people’s problems.

Thank-you for making sure that your child reads and does math with you at home.
