Friday, February 14, 2020 Mrs. Ballnik’s Classroom News     My email is ballnic@dearbornschools.org

Thank-you to those that sent in something for Valentine’s Day!

Thank-you to the children and families that came to STEAM NIGHT  last Tuesday!

Important Dates –Winter break- Feb. 17 – 21- Please have your child read every day, as most of you do!  Go on Zearn if you have a computer or make up math problems (especially stories with numbers) and see if your child can add and subtract by carrying or borrowing (old words) bundling and unbundling is the new language we use.

Math help- Try this Eureka math help and games to make your child a top math student- https://bit.ly/35QeXMc     It is also on my BLOG.   We will have an addition and subtraction test when we return.

SCIENCE – We continue to learn about bodies of water and landforms (earth science) in our unit.

SPELLING WORDS FOR NEXT WEEK ARE r-Controlled er, ir, ur.   Please continue to point out the pattern of the spelling words each week and help your child discover words with these patterns in their reading.  Soon, your child will be pointing these out to you, if they do not already.  A good idea is to get a blank notebook and keep a list.  Send them in for extra credit.

The contractions to study are: birch, burst, clerk, firm, fur, girl, herd, nerve, purple, return, shirt, third, term, verse, urge.

Social Studies– We have started our new unit, How Do Citizens Live Together in a Community?  It covers diversity and also government.  Ask your child if they know what government is.

Now the question “Why do we form governments?” is being explored.  Basically, the answers are to be safe, to make laws and to solve people’s problems.

Thank-you for making sure that your child reads and does math at home with you at home.
