Course Description:
This course will provide the student with instruction on theory of operation, how to diagnose and how to repair all aspects of an automobile engine’s operating system. Topics include ignition systems, electronic fuel injection systems, engine management systems, mechanical engine problems and drivability issues. Emphasis is placed on job level skill development and to assist the student in developing the ability to take the State of Michigan Auto Mechanics Certification Test for Tune-up/ Performance
Lab/Classroom Rules:
-A pen or pencil and your folder must accompany you daily to class. Hall passes will not be given for these items. Leave jackets and hats in your hall locker. They are not allowed in the classroom.
-A complete, neat, and well organized folder is a requirement for passing the course. The only writing on the cover should be your name, the name of the class and the hour(s) we meet. All notes and all assignments must include the common Fordson heading which includes your name, the subject and hour, the date, and teacher’s name.
-Students are expected to be in their assigned seats prior to the tardy bell. Students coming through the door while the bell is ringing will be considered tardy.
-Students should begin Bell Work as soon as they enter the class. Only 5-10 minutes will be given to finish it.
-You will remain in your seats until the bell rings. Do not stand at the doorway and do not wander around the room. The instructor will dismiss you.
-A hand up signal will be used to quiet the class down.
-Only adult behavior is acceptable in the classroom. Your full cooperation is expected at all times. During the class discussions, it is expected that you will raise your hand to make comments or ask questions. -Please do not talk out of turn.
-Any make-up assignments are the student’s responsibility. You will not be pushed into making them up. Daily assignments missed because you have been absent are to be obtained from the teacher. You are responsible for these assignments regardless of absences.
-In order to retake a test, you will need to show additional work in that topic. This could be chapter review questions, ASE style questions or additional notes.
-Tests will not be retaken during class time. Generally, Tuesday morning before school at 6:50 is test retake time. Exceptions can be made for another morning.
-Working on your car in the Fordson shop is a privilege not a right. Driving irresponsibly in the shop, in the parking lot, or anywhere else is grounds for losing this privilege.
-When it is necessary to go outside to the parking lot to either pick-up or drop-off a car, only one student per car will be allowed to leave the room.
-Writing on furniture or equipment will not be tolerated. You will be expected to clean, repair or replace, anything you deface.
-There may be times when you are asked to do a job that you may not like. That is okay, you do not have to like it, you just have to do it. Remember I will not ask you to do anything that I have not done myself.
-One phrase that will never be used in this class is “I can’t do this”. You may have difficulty doing something but you will quickly learn that you are capable of accomplishing more than you ever could imagine simply by not giving up. You will not fail. That is an order.
-Tools are the responsibility of everyone in the shop. We will all do our part to see that the tools are put away in their correct location and in good condition. If something is missing you are responsible for replacing it.
-This class will function as a team, as such, I will demand that you treat one another with dignity and respect. “Bullying” will not be tolerated. You will be expected to help each other out and pass on any knowledge or techniques you have learned on to your peers.
-Remember, this is a classroom first, not a full-service professional garage. The instructor calls the shots; do not expect to work on cars on days that are used for class work.
-Every job you do in this class must be written-up to receive credit. If you work all semester but do not document your work, you will not receive the credit.
-You will be expected to bring any necessary parts in with you the day you plan on working. Do not expect to be allowed to leave the school to pick-up any parts.
-No electronic devices such as cell phones, i-Pods, i-Pads, headphones, mp3 players etc. are to be used and/or be visible during the school day. Students that do not heed to the request of an adult will be referred to the office for insubordination (not adhering to school rules or policies) and will receive progressive discipline which can have a result of Out of School Suspension and Administrative Confiscation of the Electronic Device
-If there is a Sub, you will be on your best behavior. You will do your part to see that the substitute leaves with a positive experience.
-Food, chewing gum and any drink except water is not allowed in class.
-Audit rules are being enforced, if you have 10 or more absences and do not receive a 78% or better on the final exam, you will receive reduced credit. If you are a senior, you may not graduate.
Breaking any of these rules results in losing 20 points from the 20 you are awarded every day for following them. Please realize while you can only earn 20 a day, the amount you can lose is unlimited. Additionally, you must be in class, on time, to get your 20 points.
Attendance:
4 tardy = 1 absent
2 late after 5 minutes = 1 absent
1 late after 15 minutes = 1 absent
10 absent excused or unexcused = Audit unless cleared by the main office.
ISS does not count and OSS does not count.

Work Based Learning: Work based learning is a valuable experience in which every student in the Advanced Automotive Classes is required to participate. All students will be given opportunities to attend a minimum of one field experience each school year. Those students who do not attend the scheduled experience will be required to find a site where they will spend a minimum of one class period in a business related to their program of study. The student will be required to get the teachers signed permission, the parent or guardian’s signed permission, fill out a training agreement to be signed by the site supervisor, and provide their own transportation to and from the site. Upon completion of the field experience, the student will turn in a check chart identifying each element of the visit has been met by the student as evaluated by the site supervisor.
