Weekly Reminders….

Hello parents,

Just a few reminders:

-Students have to read daily for at least 30 minutes. For march is reading month, we sent a reading log so we can count the time and earn a school reward. This month is filled with fun activities to promote reading. We love when parents come and read to our students. If you are interested, please let me know and I will set a date and time for you to come in and read to the class. You are more than welcome to get prizes or snacks for the kids to enjoy, we have 21 students. You can bring your own book or I can provide one for you.

-Forms were sent for BINGO for books! It is a fun time to enjoy with the family and get FREE books!

-Roller skating forms were sent, you can purchase them before or pay at the door. You only pay for whoever is skating šŸ™‚

-Students need to work on the math homework daily. Please don’t do the whole packet in one day and don’t go ahead because students will not understand the homework until after I teach the lesson. Practice skip counting to improve on multiplication and division skills.

-We are halfway through module 5 which is all on fractions. As you notice with the homework, it is getting more complex. Students can get additional practice on fraction using IXL.

-For ELA we are working on a new essential skill: Determine meaning of words and phrases using context clues. For writing, we are starting a new opinion piece: Should students wear uniform to school?

-We will starting a new social students unit next week on Michigan’s government. Our Lansing trip will be in the beginning of April, right after spring break. We will be sending forms soon!

-Our animal science unit is ending. Students took the study guide home today. The test is Friday. The next science unit is about plants.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Thank you,

Mrs. Attia

Promoting Online Safety

Dear Parents,

Technology, the internet, and social media have become a big part of all of our lives. From the moment we wake in the morning to the time we go to sleep, we can be overwhelmed with technology. That’s why I wanted to take a moment to share with you information about a social media trend that regrettably seems to be reaching elementary age children.

Over the past several years, a common trend on social media or through text messaging is to pose a ā€œchallengeā€ to the viewer of the video or reader of the text message. Perhaps you may recall the ā€œice bucketā€ challenge that was popular a few years back and helped to raise funds for ALS or more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Most of the time, these ā€œchallengesā€ are done with the best intentions.

Unfortunately, there are those who choose to create and post ā€œchallengesā€ that can be dangerous and physically harmful. There have been news stories about the dangerous ā€œchallengesā€ that ask the viewer to consume certain products such as large amounts of cinnamon or even as outrageous as washing machine detergent. I have recently been told there is another one of these ā€œchallengeā€ videos going around that ask the viewer to perform acts of violence to others or to themselves. This is very distressing, especially to know that children as young as elementary age are being exposed to this type of disturbing behavior.

I’m sharing this information with you today not to alarm, panic, or spread of any rumors. Rather, I share this with you to communicate information that may be helpful to you as parents. I would also like to pass along a few simple tips that all parents can use when helping children safely navigate the internet and social media.

Basic guidelines for parental supervision:

Spend time online together to teach your kids appropriate online behavior.
Keep the computer in a common area where you can watch and monitor its use, not in individual bedrooms. Monitor any time spent on smartphones or tablets.
Bookmark kids’ favorite sites for easy access.
Check your credit card and phone bills for unfamiliar account charges.
Find out what, if any, online protection is offered by your child’s school, after-school center, friends’ homes, or any place where kids could use a computer without your supervision.
Take your child seriously if he or she reports an uncomfortable online exchange
We know our students are safe at home and we pride ourselves on creating a safe environment for your children when they are here at school. By working together we can ensure that our school will always be a safe place for learning.

Reminders…

Hello parents,

I hope everyone enjoyed their long weekend. February is almost over. The year is flying by!

A few reminders:

-Make sure students are reading daily for 30 mins. I would set a timer if that helps.

-Practice multiplication facts by skip counting, know that the 6, 7 and 8 are most difficult.

-Students should be completing one lesson of homework a day. They should not go on because I have not taught those lessons yet.

-I have some students with missing homework or don’t have their names. Students have math, spelling and reading everyday except the weekends. Of course sometimes there are expectations.

-Students have a Little Caesars Pizza Kit Fundraising Filer. The more kits we sell the more money we make for our school. The money we make goes towards our field trips, buses, field day, and any other activities/events that we have. The top three sellers in the school will get a prize!

If you have any questions, please let me know šŸ™‚

Thank you,

Mrs. Attia

School Closed

Hello All,
Due to extreme temperatures and wind chills all Dearborn Public Schools will be closed on Wednesday, January 30, 2019.
If weather conditions persist as predicted, the district will most likely remain closed. However, a decision on the status of school for Thursday will be made at a later time and most likely shared with the community on Wednesday.
Please be careful and dress appropriately if you are headed outside.

Reminders for the Week of Jan. 14th

Hello parents!

Few reminders for this upcoming week:

Yesterday the students completed the science study guide. The test will be on Monday (1-14). Have them study a little today and a little tomorrow. I will send a separate link that has the lesson on the different climates just in case they need another review.

Monday we will do our math study guide and Wednesday (1-16) will be the test.

We will continue completing NWEA for the next few weeks. We completed the reading portion and I am very proud of the results. I will send a sticky note hope once everyone is complete. Please remind students to take this test seriously and take their time.

Make sure you child is working on their multiplication facts using the skip counting strategy especially the 7’s and 8’s.

In addition, daily reading is essential to improve your child’s fluency, accuracy, comprehension and expanding their vocabulary.

Friday (1-18) will be a half day for students. Dismissal will be at 11:45. I will send another reminder Thursday.

Enjoy your weekend 😊

Reminders for Week Jan. 7

Hello parents,

Happy New Year!!! I hope this new year will bring love, happiness and health to you and your family. I hope you enjoyed the break as much as I did. It was fun spending time with my boys and doing things we normally don’t do (like eating breakfast at 1:00).

Here’s what’s happening in our class:

I passed out the mid-module quizzes that the students took before the break. Please sign and return .

NWEA testing is starting this week. We will start with reading then we will start math next week. The week after that we will finish language and science. These dates are flexible and things might change but this is the plan so far. It is important to speak with your child about this test and to take it seriously. Mr. Martin also states this in his monthly newsletter.

We are finishing up math module 4 this week. The study guide will be sent home Monday (1-14) and the test will be Wednesday (1-16).

For science, we have will continue learning about weather and climate. This week we will focus on two questions: Why are some places always hot? and How can you keep a house from blowing away in a windstorm? The study guide will be sent home Friday (1-11) and the test will be on Monday (1-14).

For writing, we are finishing up our opinion pieces on if dogs should or should not work.

For ELA, we are continuing our essential skill on main idea and supporting details.

Thank you,

Mrs. Attia

Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year!!!

Hello parents,

I can’t believe the 2018 is almost over. We only have 3 full days of school left but there is so much to do! I am very proud of all the hard work and growth the students have been doing.

A few reminders:

-Wednesday is the last day for candy gram.

-The homework packet will be due on Thursday.

-I sent a math project with your child yesterday and it is due Thursday. I received many of them today and they look awesome! I will post a sample on the class story of the end product. We will continue working on the are robots on Thursday and Friday.

-Classroom parties will be Thursday from 2:30-3:15. 3rd grade team will be ordering pizza and watching a movie. Parents are welcome to join us. If you would like to send treats, there are 20 students.

-Friday we will take a mid-module quiz about area models. IXL is a great resource to use for practice on area. I have starred the area skills under geometric measurements.

-3rd grade team is not sending a packet home for winter break. We still need students to read and write daily for an hour. In addition, practice multiplication facts by skip counting. Again, IXL is a great resource to use for extra practice. It is important to make sure your child is doing this daily during the break because when we come back, NWEA testing will start. We need to make sure that your child will maintain all the growth and hard work they’ve been working on for the past few months.

-If you have any questions, please let me know.

Enjoy your break with your children šŸ™‚

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!!!!

Hello parents,

– The math homework packet is due Monday.

-please sign the math and spelling test then return.

-We did get 13 lap trays for the class! Thank you for supporting our students learning and comfort.

– Next week will be our classroom holiday party. I will be ordering pizza for class and we will watch a movie. If you would like to send treats for the class to enjoy, we have 21 students. I will send more details as soon as I get more information from Mr. Martin. If you have any questions please let me know.

Enjoy your evening,

Mrs. Attia

Reminders for Week 12-3

Hello parents,

I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend.

We will continue working on module 3 for math on multiplication and division. If your child is still struggling, I suggest more practice of the skip counting. I am sending strips home with the skip counting facts from 2-9, not including 5. This is a much efficient strategy than just memorizing facts.

I will send the module 3 study guide on Tuesday and the test will be on Friday. It is important to study the study guide which has a similar format to the test but with different numbers.

We are started a new science unit on climate and weather. We talked about air and how it changes. We also talked about the water cycle. This week we will focus on the question: Where do clouds come from? Have your child check the weather and temperature daily so they can observe and feel what it means to be 30 degrees or 10 degrees.

For writing, we are working towards our final draft on one of the three fires tribe. Students will publish their writing via google classroom.

For ELA, we are working on Main idea and details which is a difficult strategy for many students. IXL has lots of questions that students can use for additional practice.

Please remember to send your child with a winter jacket, gloves, hats and boots for outdoor recess. Unless it is raining/snowing or very low temperature, students will go out for recess.

Just a friendly reminder for the lap tray. I know they are available at Micheal’s for $7 each which will cost me about $147 for a class set. If anyone would like to purchase a few trays for the class, we would be thankful. They don’t ship so you will have to pick up from the store. I will share the link with you, if you are interested. Even if we don’t get a class set, anything can help. Thank you for your support! There is a 30% coupon that you can use too! I will post a picture on the story if you can’t open the link.
