Examples from class
Characterization: Sowerful
Direct Text Evidence:
“I stayed in my room silent on the iron bed, listening to their voices. “Billie Jo threw the pail,” they said. “An accident,” they said. Under their words a finger pointed.” (Hesse, 71)
Reasoning:
This shows that Billie Jo is sorrowful because she wants to be alone and not want to be around people. The women helping clean put the blame on her and they kept saying it was her fault so she just sat in her room not saying a word.
Characterization: Irritated
Direct text evidence:
I am awkward with him, and irritated, and I want to be alone but I am terrified of being alone irritated
Reasoning:
This evidence proves that Billie Jo is irritated with her father because she doesn’t want to be alone, but she is so mad and irritated at her father that she is staying away from him and just suffering through it alone.
