Unit 5 Math Assessment will be Friday:
- adding & subtracting fractions with unlike denominators solved both with fraction bar model and by showing work
- rounding numbers
- placing numbers accurately on number line
- dividing up quantities (story problem solved by picture)
5th grade Field Trip to the Detroit Symphony
As we have done each year, we once again have the great opportunity to attend the Detroit Symphony’s Educational Concert on Wednesday, March 9th. Chaperones are not needed for this field trip, but money is due in advance. The permission slips will be sent home on next week, and due by Friday February 5th along with the $6/ticket.
District Water Drive to Help Families in Flint
The district is sponsoring a bottled water drive to help the families in Flint. We will be collecting bottles all next week. While we will accept individual bottles of water, it would be most helpful if families donated packs of water.

Little Casesar’s Fundraiser
Orders and money for the Howard Elementary Little Caesar’s Pizza Kit fundraiser are due on Monday, January 25th.
You still have all weekend to ask family and friends to order from the flier to help bring more great opportunities to Howard students which are funded by our P.T.A.
Planetarium Field Trip Next Friday
Permission slip and note will be sent home tomorrow. Parent drivers and chaperones are needed!

Everybody Matters!
‘Tis the season of giving and helping!
Our students packed food bags for the homeless people in Detroit. A group named “Everybody Matters” delivered them around the city last night. 52 homeless people received a bag containing bottled water, a peanut butter & jelly sandwich, granola bar, fruit and hand warmers. Special thanks to Nadia Boussi and Yousef Obeid & Family for helping Ms. Albertson fund this worthy cause.
Math Test and Other Goings-On
We have our unit 4 district assessment on Wednesday. It will cover everything from the past 4 weeks of instruction:
- long division
- partial quotient division
- interpreting the remainder with division
- multiplying and dividing by powers of 10
- decimal division
- grid pictures for multiplying decimals by decimals
- algebraic expressions
Thursday morning, the students will take Mrs. Dearth’s social studies assessment.
Thursday afternoon, we will be decorating gingerbread houses. Please do not send in any of the supplies (except for the base and aluminum foil which is needed tomorrow) until Thursday.
Friday afternoon will be the party, followed by the Howard Sing-A-Long in the gym.
Over the break, students will be assigned a solar system project. The instruction sheet with guidelines will be sent home by Friday.
