Sensory Break Ideas for Home and School.
Sensory breaks are noted to be important for students. These type of breaks can help students refocus and take in the information better. Below are some ideas as how to provide sensory breaks at home and within the classroom environment.
At Home:
- Playing active games, such as Twister, Simon Says, or Hopscotch.
- Balloon Tennis– This can be accomplished with a balloon, your hands, and masking tape. Make a line with the masking tape on the floor. One person should be on each side of the masking tape. Once there is one person on each side, the balloon can then be hit between both players across the masking tape.
- Hula Hooping Competition.
- Tightrope Walking– Make a line on the floor with masking tape and place step stools on each side of the end of the masking tape. Have the student start off on the step stool and walk across the masking tape with one foot before the other foot until they reach the other step stool .
- Wall Squats– Have the student stand with their back to the wall with their feet in front of them (about a foot or so out), then have the student slide their back down the wall until they are in a sitting position. Have the student see how long they are able to maintain this sitting position.
At School:
- Animal Walks– The classroom teacher should write down various animals and place them in a hat. Students then choose an animal out of the hat and then walk across the classroom like that animal.
- Bounce on an exercise ball.
- Jog in place.
- Jumping Jacks.
- Spontaneous Recess.
