In Language Arts we have begun to read a novel. \u00a0Students were given the choice to read Divergent or The Giver. \u00a0Both of these focus on the idea of dystopia. \u00a0Students have been provided with school copies of the book. \u00a0If they would like their own copy, I have told them that it is an option because it will allow them to write in their book. \u00a0This is not a requirement. \u00a0I can also purchase the book for the students using my teacher discount at Barnes and Noble. \u00a0This would cover the cost of tax. \u00a0If you are interested in having Divergent purchased for your child, please send them to school with $10 tomorrow. \u00a0If you are interested in having The Giver purchased for you child, please send them to school with $8. \u00a0I will be going to Barnes and Noble tomorrow night. \u00a0Tomorrow will be the only opportunity to bring in money for the book. \u00a0Of course, purchasing the book is not a requirement.<\/p>\n
Students reading The Giver worked independently to complete an anticipation guide for the novel. \u00a0Once this was completed, they work together to talk to the text for the first chapter. \u00a0While doing this, they identified vocabulary words they did not know.<\/p>\n
Students reading Divergent talked to the text with me during class today. \u00a0We read the first chapter and wrote down a list of words we do not know. \u00a0While doing this, we completed a note sheet that asked us to describe each of the five factions. \u00a0We will continue to work on this throughout the course of the marking period.<\/p>\n
