Mother’s Day Lilacs<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

A one day project, the class learned about the art technique known as pointillism or dot art. Using color sticks (a.k.a color pencil leads) we drew a glass jar with a reflection, stems and water in it. At the topof the stem students were instructed to draw a rain drop shape and than given q-tips and 3 paint colors to fill it in along with a demonstration onhowto apply it.<\/p>\n

Self Portraits<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The first day of class we read “The Color of Us” by Karen Katz and learned all about a very diverse neighborhood and all of its beautiful skin colors. We than began to draw a realistic face via directed drawing. Afterward students filled in personal details such as hair, jewelry and clothing. The second day we traced with sharpie and discussed how to mix different skin tones. The last day was reserved for using a white crayon resist with watercolor to fill in their background.<\/p>\n

Surprise Egg<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Practicing our different types of lines again and using color as a pattern to decorate our spring eggs. We added a 3-D element for fun with the egg cracking open to a surprise baby chick.<\/p>\n

Lion King: “Simba or Scar”<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

In anticipation for the McDonald musical “The\u00a0 Lion King”, students were introduced to drawing lion heads using oil pastel.\u00a0 Day one consisted of drawing a step by step drawing and adding details into the face. Day two students watched a clip from “The Lion King”where Simba loses his dad; students must decide whose side are they on. Good or evil: #TeamSimba or #Teamscar? Students than used oil pastel to create the mane of their lion to depict either Simba or Scar.<\/p>\n

Snowmen at Night<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

First grade read “Snowmen at Night” written by Caralyn Buehner and illustrated by Mark Buehner. Students looked closely at the colors used in the snowmen to create a shadow. We discovered shadows can be made with colors aside from black! Using dark and light blue oil pastels students created a casting shadow on their snowman.<\/p>\n

Color Wheel Turkey<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Right before Thanksgiving break first grade combined our favorite bird the Turkey with a key concept n the art room: the color wheel! Day one students learned some quick and interesting facts about turkeys and created a directed drawing of their turkey. Day two we discussed what is a color wheel and how it is a very important tool to artists. Using the color wheel students painted in color wheel order onto the turkeys tail feathers.<\/p>\n

Fall Leaves are Blowing around in the Cafeteria<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Students discussed the colors of fall leaves: yellow,red and orange. These colors in the art world go by the name of warm colors; colors we associate with warmth. Day one 0f the project was focused on using mod-podge (a special glue) to glue down the warm color tissue papers to the paper. Students were reminded to first put the glue down, than tissue paper and one more glue layer on top of the tissue. Day two was spent creating the background paper and cutting the leaf out of the mod-podge tissue paper. Every student’s artwork was hanged in the cafeteria for the entire school to enjoy.
