For those of you who are AVID students, you could use some of these questions about counter claim and rebuttal for your TRF forms!<\/p>\n<p><b>Counterclaim Practice<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Part 1 Directions: Read the paragraph and answer the questions below<\/b><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an argumentative paper, after the body paragraphs is a paragraph called the counterclaim paragraph. The purpose of the counterclaim is to address the opposite side of the argument and explain why that point of view is wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first sentence in a counterclaim paragraph is the counterclaim sentence. This sentence states one reason why people oppose the author\u2019s claim. The second sentence of the counterclaim paragraph is called the rebuttal sentence. \u00a0This sentence states one reason the opposing side is wrong or not strong. The third part of the counterclaim paragraph is the rebuttal evidence.The rebuttal evidence supports the counterclaim sentence by providing a quote or passage from the text. The fourth part of the counterclaim paragraph is the rebuttal elaboration. The rebuttal elaboration explains why the rebuttal evidence is important. <\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where does the counterclaim typically go in an argumentative paper? <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the purpose of a counterclaim paragraph? <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the first sentence in a counterclaim paragraph and what does it do? \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the second sentence in a counterclaim paragraph and what does it do? <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the third part of a counterclaim paragraph and what does it do?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the fourth part of a counterclaim paragraph and what does it do?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>Part 2 Directions: Write the counterclaim and rebuttal for each claim.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Claim:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is your position or viewpoint on an issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Counterclaim: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is what the opposing side is arguing about the issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Rebuttal: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is your response to the counterclaim. It further supports your claim.<\/span><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p><b>Example 1:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claim: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people say that cell phones should be\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">banned from schools, because they distract from\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">learning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Counterclaim: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Others say that students should be\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allowed to carry cell phones for emergency purposes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rebuttal: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are plenty of other, less disruptive ways for parents and students to communicate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Example 2:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claim:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Everyone should eat chocolate ice cream.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Counterclaim:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Some people are allergic to chocolate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rebuttal:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Today\u2019s ice cream manufacturers can use\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">artificial ingredients to duplicate the flavor of chocolate, so that people who are allergic are able to eat \u201cChocolate\u201d ice cream without risking an allergic reaction.<\/span><\/td>\n<td><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><b>Directions:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Write a counterclaim and rebuttal for the following claims.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claim: Students should NOT be forced to wear uniforms to school.<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Counterclaim:<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rebuttal:<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claim: The driving age should be lowered to thirteen.<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Counterclaim:<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rebuttal:<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claim: The school year should NOT be extended into the summer.<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Counterclaim:<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rebuttal:<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>Part 3 Directions: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choose one of the above claims and turn your work into a full counterclaim paragraph.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Example template:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the one hand, some people say \u2026 [<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">counterclaim<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">] \u2026 This point of view makes sense because \u2026 [<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evidence\/reasoning to support counterclaim<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">] \u2026 However, \u2026 [<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rebuttal and why it\u2019s best<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">] \u2026 Therefore, \u2026 [<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">connect back to claim\/wrap up paragraph<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">].<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hello all, Below is your homework.
