I hope you all had a restful weekend and are ready for another week of learning. Before we get to today’s activities, here are some announcements:

4 Year Old Preschool Registration
If you have a child who is 4 years old OR you know someone who has a 4 year old child, and would like to enroll them in preschool, Dearborn Public Schools offers a Free Preschool Program. Encourage your child to write their first name three times. After your child finishes writing their name, encourage them to find three things in their house that start with the same first letter in their name.

For example, if your child’s name is, “Sam,” they should find three things in your house that start with the letter, “S,” (examples could be shoes, stove, and soup).

For a challenge, your child can repeat the activity with their last name.

Math Activity

Let’s do some more measuring for math today. Let’s focus on measuring distance. Here are some materials you need to do this activity:

A ball (or something to throw/roll)

Tape measure/ruler (if you do not have a tape measure or a ruler, you can use other things to measure with: blocks, string, etc.)

Paper and pen (to write your measurements)

Here are the steps for this activity:

Encourage your child to throw or roll their ball.

Use the tape measure (or other item to measure) to measure the distance of the ball from where your child threw it.

With your pen and paper, write down the distance the ball traveled.

Repeat steps 1-3 as many times as you want.

Compare the many distances. Here are some questions you can ask your child:

“Which distance was the farthest?”

“Which distance was the least farthest?”

“How do you know which was the farthest? How do you know which was the least farthest?”

Work Time

I encourage your child to engage in imaginary play for at least 60 minutes a day. To keep the consistency with what we do at school, I encourage you to follow the Plan, Do, Review process. Here is the Work Time process:

Planning Time (5 minutes): Build your child’s ability to organize their time by having them make a “plan” with you about what they would like to play with. Children do this everyday with us at school.
