{"id":90,"date":"2013-10-27T16:05:43","date_gmt":"2013-10-27T20:05:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/smiths\/?p=90"},"modified":"2013-10-27T16:05:43","modified_gmt":"2013-10-27T20:05:43","slug":"october-28-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/smiths\/2013\/10\/27\/october-28-2013\/","title":{"rendered":"October 28, 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Our fall weather is here, crisp and cool. \u00a0\ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>We had a super, \u00a0great, fun, engaging \u00a0Science lesson on Sink or Float. \u00a0I was working with them on\u00a0<strong>predicting \u00a0<\/strong>and they were being Super Scientists with their\u00a0<strong>predictions!<\/strong>\u00a0 They were amazing. \u00a0They not only gave good predictions, but went on to\u00a0<strong>&#8220;investigate<\/strong>&#8221; why certain things sank while others floated. \u00a0They discovered that whether an object sank or floated had nothing to do with their size because a tiny metal \u00a0paper clip sank but a huge wooden block floated! \u00a0So, we went on to discuss how things that floated were alike and how things that sank were alike. \u00a0My Super Scientists discovered something else about the objects&#8230;what they were made of helped us\u00a0<strong>predict<\/strong> what might sink or float. \u00a0Great minds, especially for beginning Kindergarteners! \u00a0I am so impressed. \u00a0Mr. Denison stopped in to watch us&#8211;he took a big step backwards when we dropped the big wooden blocks into the pans of water. \u00a0I wonder why?? \u00a0\ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>This week&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>READING-We will continue our Unit on Friends. \u00a0This week theme is &#8220;What Is A Friend?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Letter is &#8220;P \u00a0p&#8221; \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Word is \u00a0&#8220;a.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We will be making a book but I think it will probably remain at school for a few weeks. \u00a0The student s made a book last week and wanted to keep it in their Reading Book Box. \u00a0You&#8217;ll get these books at home someday!<\/p>\n<p>WRITING- We&#8217;ll be making picture\/word webs. \u00a0Picture a circle with a word in the circle. \u00a0Then picture lines coming out from that circle with pictures or words attached to each line. \u00a0that&#8217;s a web. \u00a0A web helps kids organize their thoughts for writing. \u00a0We will be making webs a lot this year.<\/p>\n<p>Our Anthology story this week is a time honored classic-&#8220;The Lion and the Mouse.&#8221; \u00a0The fable has a great moral.<\/p>\n<p>MATH-We will be talking about different ways to count and measure. \u00a0They will enjoy this. \u00a0We also will play some games with Dominoes and number cards. \u00a0More fun!<\/p>\n<p>We will extend our counting into the 20&#8217;s and 30&#8217;s. \u00a0Please keep up counting with your child. \u00a0Count anything&#8230;shoes, silverware pieces, leaves, how long it takes them to wash their hands, etc. \u00a0 It really helps them. \u00a0Keep up the shoe tying practice too and it&#8217;s time to work with them on zipping their own jackets. \u00a0They can do it with practice. \u00a0(Thanks parents \ud83d\ude42 )<\/p>\n<p>SCIENCE-Spiders \u00a0 \u00a0 Non-fiction \u00a0Gathering information about spiders<\/p>\n<p>SOCIAL STUDIES-We \u00a0will finish our unit on Rules with a CLASSROOM RULE PLEDGE.<\/p>\n<p>Please make sure your child is up to date with our sight words. \u00a0Keeping up weekly is a wise study measure.<\/p>\n<p>Letters-Your child should know \u00a0<strong>M m \u00a0A a \u00a0S \u00a0s \u00a0P p <\/strong>and the <strong>sounds<\/strong> that each letter makes. \u00a0This is very important when students are writing a word and when they are trying to read a word. \u00a0When they see a word in print, they need to look at the first letter and know the sound of that first letter (and other letters in the word.)<\/p>\n<p>Words-Your child should also be able to read and write \u00a0<strong>A \u00a0 a \u00a0like, The \u00a0the \u00a0We \u00a0we \u00a0Can \u00a0 can \u00a0I<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Thank you for your support at home.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Thursday&#8212;Our All School Halloween Costume Parade will be outside around the track at 1:20. \u00a0Students may bring a costume to school in a bag on Thursday morning. \u00a0We will change into the costumes after lunch. \u00a0(Students are NOT to wear their costumes to school on Thursday morning.) \u00a0If you would like to pick up your child at lunch (11:25) and take them home to dress, that is fine.
