{"id":1738,"date":"2016-11-04T17:15:30","date_gmt":"2016-11-04T21:15:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/smiths\/?p=1738"},"modified":"2016-11-04T17:15:30","modified_gmt":"2016-11-04T21:15:30","slug":"week-of-november-7-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/smiths\/2016\/11\/04\/week-of-november-7-2016\/","title":{"rendered":"Week of November 7, 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome November with your beautiful weather and warm temperatures!<\/p>\n<p>READING-We are on to Week 3 of Unit 2 (<strong>FRIENDS<\/strong>)<\/p>\n<p>Theme-Getting Along<\/p>\n<p>COMPREHENSION STRATEGY-Ask Questions<\/p>\n<p>Parents, before you read a book, have your child do a few things. \u00a0First, check out the cover. \u00a0Who is on the cover? \u00a0What is the setting? \u00a0What do you think this story is going to be about?<\/p>\n<p>Next, generate some questions abou the book BEFORE you begin reading. \u00a0For example, today I read\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Very Stuffed Turkey.<\/span> \u00a0After discussing the things on the cover, I asked them, &#8220;What\u00a0<strong><em>questions\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">can we think of about this story BEFORE we read it. \u00a0(This will focus in their reading. \u00a0This skill can be used at any grade and will serve them well when they take tests.\u00a0<\/span><\/em> Notice that I said\u00a0<em><strong>questions<\/strong><\/em>, not tell me what you think the story is about. \u00a0Some of their\u00a0<em><strong>questions\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>were:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">What<\/span><\/strong> stuffed the turkey?&#8221; \u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">&#8220;<strong>Who<\/strong><\/span> stuffed the turkey?&#8221; \u00a0&#8220;<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Why<\/span><\/strong> is the turkey stuffed?&#8221; <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u00a0Is<\/span> <\/strong>a stuffed turkey a bad thing?&#8221; \u00a0&#8220;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Will<\/strong> <\/span>the turkey be stuffed at the end of the story?&#8221;\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>When\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>did the turkey get stuffed?&#8221; \u00a0I have\u00a0<strong>highlighted\u00a0<\/strong>words that begin\u00a0<strong><em>questions.<\/em><\/strong> \u00a0Enjoy these techniques when reading with your child. \u00a0Watch them light up when one of their\u00a0<em><strong>story questions\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>gets answered. Now that&#8217;s focusing in their reading!<\/p>\n<p>COMPREHENSION SKILL-Identify Characters \u00a0 I&#8217;m combining 2 areas of COMPREHENSION, Identifying Characters and asking questions.<\/p>\n<p>WORDS- Review\u00a0<strong>like \u00a0a \u00a0can \u00a0we \u00a0am \u00a0the \u00a0I \u00a0<\/strong>(Your child should know how to read, write, and spell all of these words.)<\/p>\n<p>LETTERS-<strong>S \u00a0s \u00a0 P \u00a0p<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>WRITING-We will finish Opinion Writing. \u00a0Next week&#8230;Informational Writing<\/p>\n<p>We will focus on\u00a0<em>beginning, middle, and end\u00a0<\/em>of a story. \u00a0Practice this at home with your child after you have read a book. \u00a0&#8220;What happened in the beginning of the story? \u00a0&#8220;&#8230;the middle&#8221; \u00a0&#8220;&#8230;the end&#8221; \u00a0Have them give you one short sentence for each part. \u00a0Watch out for them to\u00a0<strong>retell\u00a0<\/strong>the whole story. \u00a0NOT retelling&#8230;just beginning, middle, and end of the story.<\/p>\n<p>MATH-We&#8217;ll be working with Number Stories ( aka Story Problems) \u00a0Make some up on your own. \u00a0Stick with addition from 0-20.<\/p>\n<p>SCIENCE-The Scientists will be investigating, predicting, creating an hypothesis, gathering data, observing, and recording findings with&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;PUMPKINS! \u00a0(of course \ud83d\ude42 \u00a0)<\/p>\n<p><strong>REMINDER:Tuesday, Nov. 8 NO SCHOOL \u00a0Voting Day<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I will be having Conferences these next 2 weeks in the evenings. \u00a0If you have not already done so, please return your Conference slip.<\/p>\n<p>Since I was out at a meeting yesterday, I did not get to switch out the books in their\u00a0<strong>BOOK BAGS.<\/strong> \u00a0I will do so on Monday. \u00a0 Also, remember that Mondays and Fridays are GYM days and students need to wear their gym shoes on those days so they can participate in gym class.<\/p>\n<p>I had a lovely start to my day this morning&#8230;as you will see this year, I am not one to be absent very often. \u00a0I do not like to have other people teach my students. \u00a0However, there are times when I do need to be out and yesterday was one of those days. \u00a0When I got to my desk this morning there was a note from my sub, acknowledging my plans and her completion of the plans. \u00a0then she added<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dear Mrs. Smith,<\/p>\n<p>I had the most wonderful day with your Kindergarten friends! \u00a0You have such an AMAZING group of students! \u00a0I will come back and sub for you any day and I can&#8217;t wait to come back!&#8221; \u00a0Thank you to you Parents for sharing your AMAZING kids with me this year!<\/p>\n<p>Enjoy the weekend and Good Luck to Mila as she competes in an ice skating competition in Ohio. \u00a0Go MILA!<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Smith<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Smiles are contagious. \u00a0Kindness is\u00a0<em>free.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome November with your beautiful weather and warm temperatures!
