{"id":1733,"date":"2016-10-20T14:38:34","date_gmt":"2016-10-20T18:38:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/smiths\/?p=1733"},"modified":"2016-10-20T14:38:34","modified_gmt":"2016-10-20T18:38:34","slug":"today-october-20","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/smiths\/2016\/10\/20\/today-october-20\/","title":{"rendered":"Today, October 20"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wow&#8230;such excitement today. \u00a0As you&#8217;ve heard by now, we had a power failure this morning from about 9:20-11:40. \u00a0A transformer in the neighborhood blew up and it affected Howard&#8217;s power.<\/p>\n<p>My students were amazing&#8230;they just carried on, business as usual. No crying, no panic, nothing! We went right \u00a0on with our writing and Daily 5 Rotations. \u00a0Since our writing is\u00a0<strong>Opinion,<\/strong> they told me their<strong> opinion<\/strong> about staying in school during the power outage or going home. \u00a0Since it is\u00a0<strong>Opinion Writing<\/strong> and you need a reason for your\u00a0<strong>opinion,<\/strong> they gave me their reasons\/support. \u00a0Talk about a teachable moment. \u00a0\ud83d\ude42 \u00a0They were just adorable. \u00a0I have plenty of light from the windows and we even went out on the porch and watched some geese take drinks and waddle away.<\/p>\n<p>Our Superintendent, Dr. Myleko, came over and stayed until power was restored. \u00a0Our Howard engineer, Mr. Elia was right on top of things too. \u00a0Mrs. Burch returned from a meeting and it was &#8220;all hands on deck.&#8221; \u00a0What a terrific bunch of people to work with every day. \u00a0Every body just jumps in and helps wherever needed. \u00a0Very kind and thoughtful. Dr. Myleko even brought me a big flashlight to use too. \u00a0(I&#8217;m headed to Home Depot after school to get one for my room.)<\/p>\n<p>For those students buying lunch, they were served 2 slices of American cheese, crackers, a pear and milk. \u00a0Fortunately, we have a birthday treat today so they&#8217;ll get a bit more. \u00a0<em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Tomorrow&#8217;s first choice for lunch is\u00a0<strong>spaghetti<\/strong> and second choice is cheese pocket sandwich.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>What a fun day! \u00a0I really mean it too. \u00a0My students are such a joy to be with every day. \u00a0We ended the day with making jack-o-lanterns, with shapes (math) for facial features. \u00a0I enjoyed the conversations between them as they changed their pumpkins into Jack-o-lanterns.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Smith<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wow&#8230;such excitement today. \u00a0As you&#8217;ve heard by now, we had a power failure this morning from about 9:20-11:40. \u00a0A transformer in the neighborhood blew up and it affected Howard&#8217;s power.
