{"id":1706,"date":"2016-10-07T17:19:10","date_gmt":"2016-10-07T21:19:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/smiths\/?p=1706"},"modified":"2016-10-07T17:19:10","modified_gmt":"2016-10-07T21:19:10","slug":"week-of-october-10-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/smiths\/2016\/10\/07\/week-of-october-10-2016\/","title":{"rendered":"Week of October 10, 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What a busy, happy week. \u00a0Here&#8217;s what&#8217;s in store for next week&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>READING-We begin Unit 1, Week 2 of\u00a0<em><strong>Families. \u00a0<\/strong><\/em>I have read with each child and they are in Reading Groups, which will change, according to different skill needs and focus\/emphasis.<\/p>\n<p>COMPREHENSION:<\/p>\n<p>STRATEGY-Story Structure<\/p>\n<p>SKILL- Identify\u00a0<em>Setting<\/em> (where did the story take place)<\/p>\n<p>WORD-<strong>The \u00a0 the<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>LETTER-<strong>A \u00a0a<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>WRITING-We will continue with our\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Narrative Writing<\/span> ( a real story). They are doing quite well with their writing. \u00a0It&#8217;s a lot to<\/p>\n<p>choose something that happened to you,<\/p>\n<p>draw the pictures to go with the idea,<\/p>\n<p>write some letters or words to go with your picture \u00a0 \u00a0This is the tricky step because, although they can say the word, they need to &#8220;push through&#8221; the word and listen to the sounds that their mouth is making. \u00a0THEN, they need to figure out HOW to write that letter that matches the sound from their mouth! \u00a0It&#8217;s quite a process and we&#8217;re only on Day #23. \u00a0\ud83d\ude42 \u00a0In the beginning they will hear the beginning sound. \u00a0Next comes the ENDING sound. \u00a0Last comes the median sounds. \u00a0Practice &#8220;pushing through&#8221; some words together. \u00a0Go lightly with the vowels right now, especially the short vowels.<\/p>\n<p>MATH-Number awareness and vocabulary continues \u00a0 \u00a0Use can use the calendar at home to work with this. \u00a0Also check out PATTERNS&#8230;10,11,12,13,&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>20,21,22,23&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Practice reading numbers on the calendar. \u00a0For example, read all of the &#8220;dates&#8221; on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>SCIENCE-We will begin a\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Science Journal<\/span> next week in which we will record our &#8220;discoveries.&#8221; \u00a0Since we will be\u00a0<strong>observing, making an hypothesis, predicting, recording, observing again, and drawing conclusions,\u00a0<\/strong>we should probably dress like a Scientist! \u00a0So, if you have an old white T-shirt you could send in next week, they will be our &#8220;<em>Lab Coats.&#8221; \u00a0<\/em>(I have already bought them some safety glasses!)<\/p>\n<p>On the health front news, we have 2 more reported cases of Hand, Foot, and Mouth Virus being shared in here. I am constantly stressing and requiring them to wash their hands, especially after using the bathroom. \u00a0I appreciate any help on the home front with that. \u00a0Also, please remind them to FLUSH !! \u00a0Whenever a student is in the bathroom, my ear is always tuned to hear the flush sound, the water running, and paper towels. \u00a0I also squirt some Hand Sanitizer in their hands before going to lunch.<\/p>\n<p>Enjoy this beautiful weather. \u00a0Head to a Cider Mill, go for a drive along Edward Hines, play outside, go for a family bike ride, &#8230;they&#8217;ll have some good possibilities for their Narrative Writing next week.<\/p>\n<p>Someone sent me this the other day&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Teaching<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>You laugh. \u00a0You cry. \u00a0You work harder than you ever thought you could.<\/p>\n<p>Some days you try to change the world.<\/p>\n<p>Other days you just try to make it\u00a0through the day.<\/p>\n<p>Your wallet is empty.<\/p>\n<p>Your heart is full.<\/p>\n<p>And your mind is packed with memories of kids who&#8217;ve changed your life.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And I wouldn&#8217;t change a day in my life with &#8220;my kids&#8221; for anything! \u00a0Thanks for sharing your child with me.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Smith<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What a busy, happy week. \u00a0Here&#8217;s what&#8217;s in store for next week&#8230; READING-We begin Unit 1, Week 2 of\u00a0Families. \u00a0I have read with each child and they are in Reading Groups, which will change, according to different skill needs and focus\/emphasis.
