Following our district Reading Curriculum, this week’s word is “is.” \u00a0<\/strong>Since my students have been writing “is”\u00a0<\/strong>since September, I am adding the word “animal”\u00a0<\/strong>for these next 3 weeks (to go with our unit on ANIMALS.)<\/p>\n

Next week I will add the word “because.” \u00a0<\/strong>In 2 weeks my students will be taking the district WRITING PROMPT ASSESSMENT and their assignment will be an\u00a0opinion writing.\u00a0<\/strong> I want to get them ready for this writing assessment and they will need to use the word\u00a0because\u00a0<\/strong>in their writing. \u00a0I introduced some thinking and conversation yesterday to get them used to the idea of opinions. <\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>For example, “What is one of the best foods you can eat? \u00a0WHY? ”\u00a0 Here are some of their responses…<\/p>\n

“I think corn are one of the best foods you can eat\u00a0because\u00a0<\/strong>they are crunchy.” (Adriana)<\/p>\n

“I think beets are one of the best foods you can eat\u00a0because\u00a0<\/strong>they are juicy.” (Emily)<\/p>\n

“I think peas are one of the best foods you can eat\u00a0because\u00a0<\/strong>they are green and green is my favorite color.” \u00a0(Jonah)<\/p>\n

I invite you to have some conversations with your child asking their\u00a0opinion\u00a0<\/span> about things. \u00a0Non-judgemental, and remember that just the response\u00a0“because”\u00a0<\/strong>is not an answer.<\/p>\n
