I can’t believe September is over. \u00a0We have been very busy exploring the scientific process. \u00a0We tested how many seconds a first grader could stand on one foot. \u00a0Marwa G. and Ilyas stood on one foot for over 400 seconds. \u00a0Wow!<\/p>\n
In Social Studies we have been studying rules and laws and appropriate consequences. \u00a0Next week we will work on what is authority and who has authority.<\/p>\n
In Math we have been working on several concepts: counting with tally marks, numbers before, after and between other numbers, addition with objects and counting on, chart reading and graphs. \u00a0I know there is a lot to learn but so far most of the students are catching on. \u00a0 \u00a0The counting on strategy is just holding the big number in your head and counting up to the sum.<\/p>\n

Hold 6 in your head and count 3 more. \u00a0 \u00a06, 7, 8, 9.<\/p>\n

Next week we will count back for subtraction.<\/p>\n
Reading bags have been coming home. \u00a0Please make sure your child reads to you every night. \u00a0I will send home the first reading log on Monday. \u00a0Please sign the number of minutes your child reads each night and sign the log. \u00a0I will be checking the logs and students are rewarded for doing their reading.<\/p>\n
