Objective<\/strong>: \u00a0Content–I can create complex claim statements by brainstorming and collapsing lists into categories. \u00a0Language–I’ll know I can do this when I draft a claim statement for peer and teacher feedback.<\/p>\n

Activities<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

  1. \u00a0Preparation: \u00a0Place yesterday’s homework, the two double-entry journals, on your desk.<\/li>\n
  2. Independent Study: \u00a0Highlight the “pro” evidence in yellow, and the “con” in another color. \u00a0Circle the side of the argument with the strongest evidence.<\/li>\n
  3. Modeling: \u00a0Teacher will model how to find 3 buckets(categories) from the evidence about cellphone usage in schools.<\/li>\n
  4. Independent Study: \u00a0Student will decide which side of one of the two arguments has the strongest buckets.<\/li>\n
  5. Independent: \u00a0Students will draft a claim by using the claim statement formula: \u00a0__Topic + Opinion__ because__ (bucket 1)__, __(bucket 2)__, and__(bucket 3)__.<\/li>\n
  6. Review: \u00a0“Steps to Drafting a Claim.”<\/li>\n
