BW<\/span>: \u00a0Copy the definitions of “Herald,” “Ordinary World,” “Call to Adventure,” “Refusal of the Call,” and “Crossing the First Threshold.”<\/p>\n

Activities<\/span>:<\/p>\n

  1. \u00a0Share Out: \u00a0Students will be asked questions that establish connections with their own experience. \u00a0i.e. \u00a0Have you ever been bored? \u00a0Have you dreamed of an adventure?<\/li>\n
  2. As a whole class, we will discover how the “Herald” moment occurs in\u00a0Oz<\/em> and write a moment-matching statement<\/span>. \u00a0i.e. The “Herald” is the twister because it knocks Dorothy into the dream world of\u00a0Oz<\/em>, which “gets the story rolling.” What is inferred by this change? \u00a0Is this inference connected to the definition of “archetype”?<\/li>\n
  3. Independent Study: \u00a0Following this model, students will make inferences to find a\u00a0moment-matching statement<\/span>\u00a0for each of the definitions. \u00a0Inferences can be drawn from the setting and behavior of the characters. \u00a0i.e. How is the “Ordinary World” Stage inferred by Dorothy’s fall in the pigsty?<\/li>\n
  4. Group Work: \u00a0In groups of 3 or 4, compare and contrast your\u00a0moment<\/span>-matching statements<\/span> with your neighbors and make necessary changes.<\/li>\n
  5. Share Out: \u00a0Read aloud\u00a0moment-matching statements<\/span>. \u00a0What inferences can be drawn from Dorothy’s life on a farm that suggest an “Ordinary World”? \u00a0How is the “Refusal of the Call” inferred in the scene at the crystal ball? \u00a0etc.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
