Today&#8217;s fine motor activity works on <strong>tripod grasp<\/strong>, <strong>finger\/hand strengthening<\/strong>, <strong>mid-line crossing<\/strong> and <strong>motor planning\/coordination<\/strong>. The <em>more challenging task<\/em> of this activity also works on <strong>bilateral hand skills<\/strong> (use of both hands together) and <strong>in-hand manipulation skills<\/strong> (finger to palm translation &#8211;> palm to finger translation). All these skills are important for the development and manipulation of handwriting tools. \ud83d\udc50\ud83c\udffc<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Theraputty is a tried and true OT tool that is used during therapy sessions. It has resistance, which is good for strengthening. If you don&#8217;t have access to theraputty, playdoh works well too!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Video demonstration provided below. Be sure to send me a picture or video of your child participating in the activity! &#8212; khanafs@dearbornschools.org or to 734-655-0527. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The supplies needed include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Medium: theraputty or playdoh <\/li><li>Manipulatives: dull toothpicks or coins<\/li><li>empty spice jar with &#8220;larger&#8221; holes or a coin slot<\/li><li>easter eggs (optional for more of a challenge)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/samaahkot\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3114\/2020\/04\/IMG_1583-1-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Picture of supplies for activity: therapy putty, easter eggs, dull toothpicks, and empty spice jar with holes on lid.\" class=\"wp-image-363\" width=\"311\" height=\"414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/samaahkot\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3114\/2020\/04\/IMG_1583-1-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/samaahkot\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3114\/2020\/04\/IMG_1583-1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/samaahkot\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3114\/2020\/04\/IMG_1583-1-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/samaahkot\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3114\/2020\/04\/IMG_1583-1-scaled.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 311px) 100vw, 311px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Option 1<\/strong>: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Place a pile of 15-20 manipulatives on your child&#8217;s dominant side. <\/li><li>Place the putty\/playdoh in front of your child. <\/li><li>Place the spice jar\/coin slot in front of, but on the opposite side of your child (to work on <strong>mid-line crossing<\/strong>). <\/li><li>Have your child pick one toothpick\/coin at a time and push into putty\/playdoh using a tripod grasp (image can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/samaahkot\/fine-motor\/\">here<\/a>). <\/li><li>Once all manipulatives are pushed into the medium, have your child pinch the manipulatives out one at a time and into the holes of the spice jar or coin slot, while encouraging the use of tripod grasp. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Option 2<\/strong>: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Place 5 toothpicks or coins into 5 easter eggs (total of 25 manipulatives). <\/li><li>One egg at a time, have your child use both hands to &#8220;crack open&#8221; the egg and pour manipulatives into the palm of their dominant hand. <\/li><li>Using their in-hand manipulation skills, have them move one manipulative at a time from their palm to their finger (<em>palm &#8211;> finger translation<\/em>) to push into the putty\/playdoh using tripod grasp. <\/li><li>Once all 5 manipulatives are in the medium, have your child pinch one manipulative at a time from finger to palm (<em>finger &#8211;> palm translation<\/em>). <\/li><li>Once all manipulatives are in their palm, one at a time, have them move them from palm to finger and into the slot. <\/li><li>Repeat these steps for the remaining eggs.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube aligncenter wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"unlocking kids&#039; pOTential | Fine Motor Activity\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/w_RUbFSQ_WM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Happy Friday!
