{"id":963,"date":"2019-04-16T07:08:43","date_gmt":"2019-04-16T11:08:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/sabbaghela\/?p=963"},"modified":"2019-04-16T07:09:56","modified_gmt":"2019-04-16T11:09:56","slug":"examining-authors-purpose-and-craft","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/sabbaghela\/2019\/04\/16\/examining-authors-purpose-and-craft\/","title":{"rendered":"Examining Author&#8217;s Purpose and Craft"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For the remainder of the school year, students will be examining author&#8217;s purpose and craft, specifically how both of these things impact the reader.<\/p>\n<p>For example,\u00a0 my friend Christina Greer has a book coming out entitled\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.christinagreerwrites.com\/\"><em>Everything&#8217;s Jake<\/em><\/a> which focuses on mental health in young boys.\u00a0 Greer states, &#8220;Mental health issues affect so many of today&#8217;s youth.\u00a0<span class=\"color_25\"><em>Everything&#8217;s Jake<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>was written for any teen\u00a0trying to navigate their way, particularly boys, who feel they might be living their life &#8216;off on the sidelines.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Knowing an author&#8217;s purpose can impact the reader&#8217;s experience with the text.<\/p>\n<p>For example, Elie Wiesel, Holocaust survivor and\u00a0<em>Night<\/em>, shares that he wrote the memoir for several reasons:\u00a0 1) to share man&#8217;s inhumanity to man and 2) in hopes that such atrocities will never happen again.<\/p>\n<p>I look forward to sharing\u00a0Wiesel&#8217;s memoir with my students as we dive deeper into two of our essential standard for LA4:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>10.5:\u00a0Analyze in detail how an author&#8217;s ideas or claims are developed and refined by particular sentences, paragraphs, or larger portions of a text (e.g., a section or chapter).<\/li>\n<li>10.6:\u00a0Determine an author&#8217;s point of view or purpose in a text and analyze how an author uses rhetoric to advance that point of view or purpose.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For the remainder of the school year, students will be examining author&#8217;s purpose and craft, specifically how both of these things impact the reader.
