{"id":940,"date":"2019-02-03T17:03:38","date_gmt":"2019-02-03T22:03:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/sabbaghela\/?p=940"},"modified":"2019-02-05T10:55:52","modified_gmt":"2019-02-05T15:55:52","slug":"metamorphosis-embracing-change-in-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/sabbaghela\/2019\/02\/03\/metamorphosis-embracing-change-in-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"#Metamorphosis &#8211; Embracing #Change in 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Today I had brunch with some friends (coworkers from my old school).\u00a0 All three of us are at new schools, having moved on from UPA.\u00a0 All of a sudden, one of my friends turned to me and said, &#8220;Sara, you&#8217;ve changed.&#8221;\u00a0 and, as if anticipating my rebuttal, quickly followed up, &#8220;and not in a bad way.&#8221;\u00a0 *smiles*<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"bitmoji-image alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/render.bitstrips.com\/v2\/cpanel\/3928157c-4c16-450b-9fd8-34707768bc36-3d13e585-2985-4ca4-8358-8fa5fe4fb9fc-v1.png?transparent=1&amp;palette=1\" alt=\"Bitmoji Image\" width=\"128\" height=\"128\" data-src=\"https:\/\/render.bitstrips.com\/v2\/cpanel\/3928157c-4c16-450b-9fd8-34707768bc36-%s-v1.png?transparent=1&amp;palette=1\" data-downloadurl=\"image\/png:15559.png:https:\/\/render.bitstrips.com\/v2\/cpanel\/3928157c-4c16-450b-9fd8-34707768bc36-3d13e585-2985-4ca4-8358-8fa5fe4fb9fc-v1.png?transparent=1&amp;palette=1\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I have changed &#8211; whether the change has been good or bad &#8211; it made me happy to hear it, because change is HARD!\u00a0 Making the kinds of choices which lead to you being happier and healthier &#8211; those types of changes do not happen overnight.\u00a0 At the end of the day, I want to be someone that I am proud to be &#8211; and it takes a lot of mindfulness to work towards that goal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There&#8217;s a quote by Henry Ford which cautions, <em>&#8220;If you do what you&#8217;ve always done, you&#8217;ll get what you&#8217;ve always got.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>I could literally litter this entire blog entry with<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/quotes\/tag\/change\"> beautiful and inspiring quotes about embracing change<\/a> (and I probably will), but the thing is, human beings are hardcore reticent about change &#8211; and it does not seem to matter whether it is change for the better, or change for the worse.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I don&#8217;t think we mean to be #antichange, I think it just happens naturally, as a result of being creatures of comfort, or like I like to say, embracing &#8220;the devil you know&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I remember just getting the hang of the typewriter when the word processing unit came out, being proud of my cassette collection, when CDs were introduced, and cleaning out Blockbuster&#8217;s 5 for $20 VHS clearance, when DVDs started taking up room on the shelves.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"bitmoji-image alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/render.bitstrips.com\/v2\/cpanel\/575b3b06-c6f1-4c33-afd5-2095e285ff03-3d13e585-2985-4ca4-8358-8fa5fe4fb9fc-v1.png?transparent=1&amp;palette=1\" alt=\"Bitmoji Image\" width=\"130\" height=\"130\" data-src=\"https:\/\/render.bitstrips.com\/v2\/cpanel\/575b3b06-c6f1-4c33-afd5-2095e285ff03-%s-v1.png?transparent=1&amp;palette=1\" data-downloadurl=\"image\/png:10838.png:https:\/\/render.bitstrips.com\/v2\/cpanel\/575b3b06-c6f1-4c33-afd5-2095e285ff03-3d13e585-2985-4ca4-8358-8fa5fe4fb9fc-v1.png?transparent=1&amp;palette=1\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Looking back, I remember that with each change, I resisted.\u00a0 No better than a toddler throwing a tantrum, I balked at the discomfort, unfamiliarity, and differentness of every new change.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I remember early in my career as a teacher, I was sitting in my principal&#8217;s office, and she said, &#8220;Sara, if you&#8217;re going to remain in education, you&#8217;re going to have to do a better job going with the flow.&#8221;\u00a0 Storming off in a huff, I muttered to myself, &#8216;We&#8217;ll see about that.&#8217;\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But, she was right. The more uptight and unyielding I was, the more resentful and frustrated I became.\u00a0 It was this really ugly cycle &#8211; and I repeated it, over and over and over again, for years, before the light bulb went off.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"bitmoji-image alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/render.bitstrips.com\/v2\/cpanel\/4f5f12dd-38f3-40ab-a254-20df6f87e61a-3d13e585-2985-4ca4-8358-8fa5fe4fb9fc-v1.png?transparent=1&amp;palette=1\" alt=\"Bitmoji Image\" width=\"102\" height=\"102\" data-src=\"https:\/\/render.bitstrips.com\/v2\/cpanel\/4f5f12dd-38f3-40ab-a254-20df6f87e61a-%s-v1.png?transparent=1&amp;palette=1\" data-downloadurl=\"image\/png:7759.png:https:\/\/render.bitstrips.com\/v2\/cpanel\/4f5f12dd-38f3-40ab-a254-20df6f87e61a-3d13e585-2985-4ca4-8358-8fa5fe4fb9fc-v1.png?transparent=1&amp;palette=1\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I would LOVE to say since that day, I have embraced change like a BOSS and have helped others to understand and appreciate change &#8211; but, alas, I am still human, and can still get bogged down by feelings of vulnerability and discomfort.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>*insert <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=serenity+prayer&amp;safe=strict&amp;rlz=1C1GGRV_enUS760US760&amp;source=lnms&amp;tbm=isch&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwjPjYKa-qTgAhWK0YMKHe06DZ8Q_AUIDigB&amp;biw=1280&amp;bih=658#imgrc=4XcSFgW1DYD6VM:\">Serenity Prayer<\/a> here*<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For example, almost two weeks ago, I was approached about taking over two sections of AP Language.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"bitmoji-image alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/render.bitstrips.com\/v2\/cpanel\/6ed0a0da-32f3-4473-859a-27dc19fc58eb-3d13e585-2985-4ca4-8358-8fa5fe4fb9fc-v1.png?transparent=1&amp;palette=1\" alt=\"Bitmoji Image\" width=\"135\" height=\"135\" data-src=\"https:\/\/render.bitstrips.com\/v2\/cpanel\/6ed0a0da-32f3-4473-859a-27dc19fc58eb-%s-v1.png?transparent=1&amp;palette=1\" data-downloadurl=\"image\/png:9602.png:https:\/\/render.bitstrips.com\/v2\/cpanel\/6ed0a0da-32f3-4473-859a-27dc19fc58eb-3d13e585-2985-4ca4-8358-8fa5fe4fb9fc-v1.png?transparent=1&amp;palette=1\" \/> There I was, in second hour, pressed to make a rather big decision quickly.\u00a0 On the one hand, AP LANG!!! *screams internally and externally with excitement* &#8230;. on the other hand, plagued with doubts and uncertainty and regret. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>&#8220;Do what you&#8217;ve always done&#8230; get what you&#8217;ve always got.&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So, I accepted the challenge, and unwittingly thrust my students into the same ch<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"bitmoji-image alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/render.bitstrips.com\/v2\/cpanel\/a06ccfa6-684d-4d0d-b682-21e5c3414a97-3d13e585-2985-4ca4-8358-8fa5fe4fb9fc-v1.png?transparent=1&amp;palette=1\" alt=\"Bitmoji Image\" width=\"92\" height=\"92\" data-src=\"https:\/\/render.bitstrips.com\/v2\/cpanel\/a06ccfa6-684d-4d0d-b682-21e5c3414a97-%s-v1.png?transparent=1&amp;palette=1\" data-downloadurl=\"image\/png:3836.png:https:\/\/render.bitstrips.com\/v2\/cpanel\/a06ccfa6-684d-4d0d-b682-21e5c3414a97-3d13e585-2985-4ca4-8358-8fa5fe4fb9fc-v1.png?transparent=1&amp;palette=1\" \/>aos of change that I had to go through.\u00a0 Semester One students were devastated. Semester Two students were elated. It was an emotional tsunami for everyone. I was feeling shame for wanting what I wanted, knowing that my semester one students would be hurt at the fact that I was no longer their teacher, but I had to give myself a break &#8211; this was an exciting opportunity and I was going to make the most of it!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">An Instagram account (<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/anisahamat_\/?hl=en\">@anisahamat_<\/a>) posted a quote by Maya Angelou that made me pause, <em>\u201cWe delight in the beauty of the\u00a0butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 Sometimes change happens in plain view and everyone can see and appreciate the struggle and sacrifice you went through.\u00a0But for most of us, change is something that is quiet and under the radar.\u00a0 The process is no different, but you carry the weight of both the struggle and the change on your own. I&#8217;m here to tell you, you don&#8217;t have to.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Chimamanda Adichie, in her <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/chimamanda_adichie_the_danger_of_a_single_story?language=en\">TED Talk<\/a> &#8220;The Danger of a Single Story&#8221; shares that <em>&#8220;<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" style=\"color: #000000;\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Stories matter.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" style=\"color: #000000;\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Many stories matter.<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" style=\"color: #000000;\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Stories have been used to dispossess and to malign,<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" style=\"color: #000000;\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">but stories can also be used to empower and to humanize<\/a><\/em><a class=\"t-d:n hover\/bg:gray-l.5\" style=\"color: #000000;\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><em>&#8220;<\/em> (17:24).\u00a0 When you&#8217;re struggling, shame keeps you quiet &#8211; and, as a result, you risk your chances of succeeding. So share your stories of struggle and watch each other flourish!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I guess what I&#8217;m trying to say is that in a world where SO much is OUTSIDE your control &#8211; focusing on YOU and what you CAN change, is a better use of your time and energy, then allowing the illusion of control to shackle you to a life of bitterness and resentment.\u00a0 Choose wisely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/wisdom-trek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Yesterday-I-Was-Clever-2.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for \u00e2\u0080\u009cYesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world.
