{"id":529,"date":"2017-05-05T18:27:00","date_gmt":"2017-05-05T22:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/sabbaghela\/?p=529"},"modified":"2017-05-05T18:27:00","modified_gmt":"2017-05-05T22:27:00","slug":"the-many-sides-of-survival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/sabbaghela\/2017\/05\/05\/the-many-sides-of-survival\/","title":{"rendered":"The Many Sides of Survival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/sabbaghela\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2079\/2017\/05\/download.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-530 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/sabbaghela\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2079\/2017\/05\/download-300x128.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"128\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/sabbaghela\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2079\/2017\/05\/download-300x128.png 300w, https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/sabbaghela\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2079\/2017\/05\/download.png 344w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When one hears the word &#8220;survival&#8221;, many things may come to mind.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One might think of Darwin&#8217;s philosophy &#8220;Survival of the Fittest.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Or how might survive a zombie apocalypse.<\/li>\n<li>One could imagine the dystopian world of\u00a0<em>The Hunger Games<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<em>Divergent.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Or one might think of emotional survival &#8211; and the importance of mental health.<\/li>\n<li>One might think of how people in history may have survived<em>\u00a0<\/em>The Great Depression or the Holocaust.<\/li>\n<li>Or, for high school students, they might think about what it means to survive high school (and all that entails).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Survival has many sides. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the last card-marking period of the school year, students will be examining the &#8220;DNA of survival&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The essential questions for this unit are as follow:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What elements exist within us for survival?<\/li>\n<li>&nbsp;\n<p>How do survivors adapt to cope with unforeseen circumstances and events?<\/li>\n<li>How can knowing the atrocities of the past serve as a caution for the future?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Survival is not only about loss and despair &#8211; it is also about hope; and as Andy Dufresne said in the movie <em>The Shawshank Redemption<\/em>, &#8220;Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>HW: On Tuesday, students will be asked to pick out a memoir or auto-biography for their SSR novel (more details to follow).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When one hears the word &#8220;survival&#8221;, many things may come to mind.
