{"id":276,"date":"2016-10-17T21:39:01","date_gmt":"2016-10-18T01:39:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/sabbaghela\/?p=276"},"modified":"2016-10-17T21:48:30","modified_gmt":"2016-10-18T01:48:30","slug":"the-danger-of-a-single-story-ted-talk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/sabbaghela\/2016\/10\/17\/the-danger-of-a-single-story-ted-talk\/","title":{"rendered":"TED Talk: &#8220;The Danger of a Single Story&#8221; by Chimamanda Adichie"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As teachers, we have the <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/a\/dearbornschools.org\/document\/d\/19dxJWbuzoHLcfGPs4-nKv5lWFTRChGi71tkMZjpemzs\/edit?usp=sharing\">opportunity<\/a>, nay, the responsibility to impact our students&#8217; lives and learning in a profound way.<\/p>\n<p>This week I have the pleasure of sharing a message that can CHANGE the way students look at what influences their perceptions of the world.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Change the way students look at what influences their perceptions of the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Wow &#8211; what an awesome responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>Today students watched a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/about\/our-organization\">TED talk<\/a> given by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chimamanda.com\/\">Chimamanda Adichie<\/a>, a Nigerian novelist,\u00a0entitled, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/chimamanda_adichie_the_danger_of_a_single_story?language=en?utm_source=tedcomshare&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=tedspread\">The Danger of a Single Story<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Her message is that, &#8220;The single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/mi621.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/09\/stereotypes-2.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This week students will be summarizing Adichie&#8217;s claim, analyzing the rhetorical devices she used in her TED talk, and making a connection with her message.<\/p>\n<p>I am really excited to be sharing this with my students &#8211; and I know that they are up for the challenge of digging deeper, examining the single stories in their life, and opening their minds to this shift in their thinking.<\/p>\n<p>For anyone interested in reading more on the topic, I encourage you to check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/04\/19\/opinion\/the-danger-of-a-single-story.html?ref=oembed\">David Brooks&#8217; New York Times Op-Ed on Adichie&#8217;s TED Talk<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; he reiterates Adichie&#8217;s message and examines the political ramifications of &#8216;the single story&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>(Shout-Out to my partner teacher, <a href=\"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/dobbshonors10\/category\/blogs\/\">Mrs. Dobbs<\/a>, for collaborating on this assignment\u00a0with me!)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As teachers, we have the opportunity, nay, the responsibility to impact our students&#8217; lives and learning in a profound way.
