{"id":1203,"date":"2020-04-14T07:20:30","date_gmt":"2020-04-14T11:20:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/sabbaghela\/?p=1203"},"modified":"2020-04-13T22:27:46","modified_gmt":"2020-04-14T02:27:46","slug":"what-truly-matters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/sabbaghela\/2020\/04\/14\/what-truly-matters\/","title":{"rendered":"What Truly Matters"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Part of me wishes I had written this blog post a week ago, after Governor Whitmer\u2019s announcement that school would not resume for the 2019-2020 school year.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/tD1Uln9cmbg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/tD1Uln9cmbg\/maxresdefault.jpg\" alt=\"Gov. Whitmer closes Michigan K-12 schools for remainder of year ...\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Truth be told, I was hoping\/waiting to hear from Admin\/Superintendent Maleyko\/Michigan Department of Education about what the next steps were for remote learning\u2026 but alas, we are still waiting to hear.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are nine weeks remaining in the school year.&nbsp; We have already gone through three weeks of remote learning.&nbsp; Mathematically speaking, that\u2019s a quarter of the way through our state-mandated school-time together.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-background has-very-light-gray-color has-vivid-green-cyan-background-color\">I have not changed my mind about whether or not the work <em>should<\/em> count.&nbsp; My official <a href=\"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/sabbaghela\/2020\/03\/20\/does-it-count\/\">statement<\/a> is as follows:&nbsp; <strong>I encourage each student who is able (emotionally, mentally, physically, technologically, etc.) to do so, to complete the enrichment exercises.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And I hold that position, while at the same time, strongly agreeing with the sentiments expressed in this post:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We must think about equity in our expectations. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/02ZakWFwLK\">pic.twitter.com\/02ZakWFwLK<\/a><\/p>&mdash; HighFive (@HighFiveK12) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HighFiveK12\/status\/1246937189025538049?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 5, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As I shared with a parent last week, I am aware that many students are unable to complete the enrichment activities for a variety of reasons &#8211; and I am compassionate and understanding of that.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-background has-very-light-gray-color has-very-dark-gray-background-color\">I don\u2019t know about you, but I have really been struggling these past four weeks. <a href=\"https:\/\/ro-kwon.com\/\">R.O. Kwan<\/a>\u2019s&nbsp; <em>New York Times<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/04\/09\/opinion\/sunday\/coronavirus-grief-mental-health.html\">op-ed<\/a> entitled \u201cTrouble Focusing? Not Sleeping?&nbsp; You May Be Grieving\u201d helps explain why.
