CHALLENGE<\/strong>: Write your own adaptation of this poem as a character from something we’ve read this year (or from a character’s perspective from an SSR book). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am from poverty, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

from politeness and pity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am from the nickels for ice-cream. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Shiny, hidden, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

they felt like secrets.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am from the chipped slop jars, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

the red geraniums<\/p>\n\n\n\n

whose beauty I cultivated<\/p>\n\n\n\n

as if they could save me.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am from Ewells and Maycomb, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

from whiskey and racism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am from the you-try-and-make-mes <\/p>\n\n\n\n

and I\u2019ll-kill-yas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m from the testimony on the stand<\/p>\n\n\n\n

with my father looking on<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and not answering the lawyer\u2019s questions.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m from Bob and Burris\u2019 Branch, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

relief checks and crawling cooties. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the chiffarobe Tom Robinson <\/p>\n\n\n\n

busted to help me out <\/p>\n\n\n\n

the lies I told to avoid another beating.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the courtroom was a jury<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ignoring the truth<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a verdict of guilty <\/p>\n\n\n\n

to haunt me and kill him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am from the dumpster —<\/p>\n\n\n\n

trash strewn in the front yard — <\/p>\n\n\n\n

no hope to be found.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
