Thank you to all of those parents who have been understanding with the snow days and cold weather days these past two weeks. As you may have heard, tomorrow we will also be having a snow day due to the cold weather. Please make sure to stay warm and safe! We also have postponed the Lansing trip until February. Please see the previous post for more details on the field trip.

Due to the snow days we will be making up our testing this week. Please make sure that when your child comes to school they are prepared to finish their NWEA and DRA.

Here is what we will be covering this week at school:

Reading- Comparing folktales and understanding the messages and themes

Writing- Researching about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Narrative Writing

Social Studies- Growth of Michigan within the lumber and farming industries

Science- This week we began a unit of study called “Animals Through Time.” In our first Mystery we explored the idea that the rock under our feet sometimes contains fossils. Those fossils reveal how habitats have changed through time. For example, fossil shark teeth and fossil starfish found in the center of North America are evidence that what is grassland today must have been an ocean in the ancient past.

You can help support your child’s learning by striking up a conversation about an exotic habitat you might have visited on vacation. If feasible, consider visiting the nearest science museum and/or quarry to see any local fossils that have been found in our region.

Math- Fact fluency for the factors 6-9. Discussing the properties of multiplication and division (commutative and distributive) using the facts for 6-9.

Spelling- No spelling this week due to snow days !

Leader in Me- Habit 4: Think Win-Win is an attitude toward life- a mental frame of mind that says I can win, and so can you. It’s not me or you, it’s both of us. Think Win-Win is the foundation for getting along well with others and solving problems.

Upcoming Events

Tuesday- NWEA Testing

Thursday- NWEA Testing, Choir, and Roller Skating at Lincoln Part (after-school)

Friday- ELG tutoring

Next Week- Book Fair, PBIS reward, and Late Start

It looks like winter has finally arrived!
