{"id":337,"date":"2016-11-22T15:14:27","date_gmt":"2016-11-22T20:14:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/randalc\/?p=337"},"modified":"2016-11-22T15:14:27","modified_gmt":"2016-11-22T20:14:27","slug":"reading-comprehension-take-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/randalc\/2016\/11\/22\/reading-comprehension-take-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Reading comprehension take 2!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This was from my last post on reading comprehension. \u00a0I am moving it here so it will go along with the continued information I plan to post regarding comprehension strategies you can use at home.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Determining importance<\/strong>= I understand the main ideas of the text and the author&#8217;s message.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What it sounds like&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>The text was mostly about&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>The author is trying to tell us that&#8230;*<\/li>\n<li>I learned&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>The important details were&#8230;*<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Most of our reading at home tends to be narrative. \u00a0The two I put a * next to are great follow up statements to talk through with your child. \u00a0They may have a hard time with this at first. \u00a0You can model it for them!<\/p>\n<p>~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~<\/p>\n<p>Reading Comprehension<\/p>\n<p>Reading comprehension is an important part of reading. \u00a0We want our children to be readers not &#8220;word callers&#8221;! \u00a0Over the next few school days I will be including things you can talk with your child about during reading to help expand their comprehension beyond the &#8220;who&#8221; and &#8220;what&#8221; the story is about.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Making Connections<\/strong>= I use what I know to understand what I read.<\/p>\n<p>What it sounds like&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It reminds me of when I read&#8230; because&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>It reminds me of a time I&#8230; because&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>It reminds me of something I heard about because&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This comprehension technique helps the reader have a deeper understanding about the characters or ideas they read because they have related it to a life experience, be it something else they read of something they have first hand knowledge about.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This was from my last post on reading comprehension. \u00a0I am moving it here so it will go along with the continued information I plan to post regarding comprehension strategies you can use at home.
