{"id":224,"date":"2020-03-17T17:06:40","date_gmt":"2020-03-17T21:06:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/puchals\/?page_id=224"},"modified":"2020-03-19T12:51:06","modified_gmt":"2020-03-19T16:51:06","slug":"phonics","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/puchals\/phonics\/","title":{"rendered":"Phonics"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Phonics is the study and use of sound\/ letter correspondences and syllable patterns to help students identify written words.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phonics instruction teaches students the relationship between sounds and letters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Teaching Phonics:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Phonics is the method of teaching children to link phonemes to the symbol it represents to form a grapheme, a symbol that represents a sound.   Learners are able to do this when they have a strong understanding of phonemic awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Decoding:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The process of decoding is when a child is able to see a letter and then say the sound it represents out loud.<br>Letter-sound correspondence involves thinking about what sound a word starts with, saying the sound out loud, and then recognizing how that sound is represented by a letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Blending:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The process of combining individual sounds together and say the whole word.<br>This is a big step for many children and takes time and patience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Encoding:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The process of using letter-sound knowledge to write.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Encoding happens when a child is able to recall the sound and the symbol that is assigned to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Developing skills:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vowels:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Short Vowels: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\/a\/ as in apple<\/li><li>\/e\/ as in elephant<\/li><li>\/i\/ as in igloo<\/li><li>\/o\/ as in octopus<\/li><li>\/u\/ as in umbrella<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Long Vowels:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\/a\/ as in acorn<\/li><li>\/e\/ as in equal<\/li><li>\/i\/ as in ice cream<\/li><li>\/o\/ as in open<\/li><li>\/u\/ as in unicorn<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CVC Words: <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Three-letter words arranged consonant, vowel, consonant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CCVC and CVCC Words:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Consonant Clusters are words with two consonants located together in a word.<br>Example: CCVC (consonant, consonant, vowel, consonant) stop and plan<br>Example: CVCC (consonant, vowel, consonant, consonant) milk and fast<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vowel Digraphs:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A digraph is two vowels that when they are together, make one sound.<br>Examples: \/oa\/as in boat, \/ee\/ as in sheep, \/ai\/ as in rain<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A split digraph (magic e) is when<strong> <\/strong>a digraph is split by a consonant.<br>Examples: take\u00a0\u2013 the &#8216;ae&#8217; here make one sound. The &#8216;ae&#8217; digraph is split by the &#8216;k&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Consonant Digraphs:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A consonant digraph is two consonants that when together make one sound.<br>Example: \/ch\/ as in chat, chain; and \/sh\/ as in shop, shout<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Consonant Blends:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A consonant blend is two or more consonants are blended together, but each sound may be heard in the blend.<br>Example: \/bl\/ as in blend, \/str\/ as in string, \/gr\/ as in grape<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trigraphs:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A trigraph is a group of three letters that makes a single sound.<br>Example: \/igh\/ as in &#8220;sigh&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Practice at Home:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weareteachers.com\/build-phonics-skills\/\">We Are Teachers <\/a>has a wonderful resource that is designed to build phonic skills.
