After arriving in his hometown, he brags about his tremendous feats. Then, Cecil Saunders challenges Montgomery to prove his boasts. Montgomery accepts the challenge to jump the next morning at 7 a.m., as long as he is given dinner and a place to rest by the townspeople. However, Montgomery leaves at 6 a.m. and avoids the challenge. This summarizes how the townspeople were tricked by Montgomery May.
