Class List for Valentine Cards:
Due to a short week, the students will not have a spelling test this week. We are going to use this time to practice some language skills instead.
Reminder: 1/2 day Thursday, February, 14th. Dismissal @ 11:45
No School Friday, Feb. 15th or Monday, Feb. 18th.
We will be enjoying some fun activities for Valentine’s Day on February 14th. The students can bring in Valentine’s Day cards to pass out to their classmate if they choose. This is a half day so the students will need to bring their cards with them when they come to school in the morning, I will send home a class list so that the students can include everyone if they choose to bring in cards.
Students will need to bring in an empty cereal box by Thursday, Feb. 14th. We will use this to make a Valentine Card holder.
Our homeroom parents will be taking care of sending in the food for our celebration.
LOOK FOR THIS TECHNOLOGY RESOURCE LIST:
I am sending home a purple slip that has a list of resources that the students should use at home to practice the fourth grade curriculum. This is very similar to the list I gave to you at November Conferences and the students turned in at the end of the this last card marking in January. This resource list is for the students to keep track of extra practice they do at home. They are asked to put the date next to the activity on the sheet when they complete it at home. The purpose is to give them valuable resources that will help them to continue to progress with the fourth grade curriculum and to improve on their NWEA scores in May. The students are asked to return this purple slip at the end of this card marking which is March 28th. I am asking that they only use this slip that I am giving them today and not a different sheet of paper.
A couple of students came to school today with a sweatshirt and not a coat. It was in the low 40’s when they came in this morning and mid 40’s at lunch recess. Also, some of the students are taking their coats off at lunch recess, our lunch recess staff asked me to talk to them about keeping their coats on during the winter months. I am going to remind them about the importance of keeping their bodies warm and if you could talk to them at home that would be helpful.
Have a great rest of the day!
Due to the weather issues this week, we had to cancel our Field Trip to the Underground Railroad Living Museum scheduled for Thursday, January 31st. I will work on rescheduling this trip and I will let you know when I have the information.
In case we do not have school on Wednesday and/or Thursday, I am sending home some reading and math work. This is what I went over with the students today:
Tuesday: Math – lesson #17 pages Reading – Freedom Crossing Group ~ Finish chapter 13 & questions. Harriet Tubman Group ~ Finish chapter 2 & questions.
Wednesday: Math lesson #18 pages and Lesson 18 on Zearn.org Reading- Freedom Crossing ~ Chapter 14 & questions. Harriet Tubman Group ~ Chapter 3 & questions.
Thursday: Math – Lesson 19 on Zearn.org Reading – Freedom Crossing ~ Chapter 15 & questions. Harriet Tubman ~ Chapter 4 & questions.
The report cards went home on Friday. Hopefully you had a chance to go over it with your child and discuss their progress and goals for the next card marking. The students and I will be setting new goals in school as well. We do not have scheduled conferences for the winter however, If we talked about meeting in January at our November conference then I will be contacting you shortly to set up a day and time.
Have a great week and keep warm!
Due to the extreme cold and windchill that will be setting in this afternoon, we will be adjusting our dismissal for the safety and warmth of students and staff. Our student valet system will make this easy to do and with your cooperation, things will run smoothly. Thank you for your assistance ahead of time and thank you to the Howard staff and parent volunteers for making it easy to successfully coordinate efforts that require a lot of support to work:
Your dismissal driving route will remain the same, just keep in mind the following:
Please make sure you have your student valet sign where it is easy for staff to see
Staff will be stationed at the student drop off (where the old bus lane used to be/in front of the flagpole) they will radio in your child’s name and your child will then be sent out from the door closest to the flagpole.
Students who exit on Lawrence will still exit on Lawrence, please just make sure if you pick up on this north side of the school that you have your sign displayed visibly. If you have misplaced your sign, you can write your child’s name in large print on a piece of paper.
You will not see the students outside – Students will wait inside until their name is called
Please remain in your car
*****This means that traffic might move a little bit slower this afternoon. Please BE PATIENT, we want to ensure that the students stay safe and warm and this is the most efficient way to do so.
Several parents have been calling in inquiring about school tomorrow. Please remember this is a District wide decision. For information on school closings, please check the District website at dearbornschools.org
After School Tutoring is cancelled for today!
The card marking ends this Friday, January 18th. Therefore, the students will have a few final assessments this week.
The mid- module math assessment will be Tuesday, January 15th. We worked on the review in class on Friday. The students brought home the review to finish over the weekend. We will go over it today in class. They will bring it home again tonight to practice any skills that are still tricky.
Unit 3 test will be on Thursday, January 17th. The students will start the review in class today. They will bring it home Tuesday & Wednesday to go over it at home. We will also continue to review in class this week.
We will be finishing our current reading group books this week. I am assessing their progress in comprehension and fluency as we meet in our small groups. I will also continue to meet with students 1:1 to assess their reading skills.
We will have our spelling test today for last week’s words due to running out of time on Friday. Students will bring home new words today for this week and our final test for the card marking will be on Friday.
We will not have a unit assessment in science this week. We began a physical science unit a couple of weeks ago so we are still doing daily assessments with our learning activities.
We completed the math NWEA test last week, we will be doing the Reading test this week.
I hope you had a fantastic vacation with your children and a smooth start to the New Year. Thank you to all of the parents who came in to help with our breakfast and holiday celebration, the students and I had a wonderful day and it wouldn’t have been possible without all of your help!
We have a few things happening this week so I wanted to give you an update and reminders.

Our Holiday Party will take place this Friday, Dec. 21st in the morning. The students can wear their pajamas to school if they like, this way they will feel cozy while our homeroom parents make a pancake breakfast for us. The pajamas need to be appropriate for school and warm enough for going outside for recess. During our party we will play a gift exchange game with the $5.00 school supply gifts the students have been bringing in.
Reminder: We will have our winter vacation starting December 22nd-January 6th.
Have a wonderful time with your children during this vacation!
The Holiday Boutique will be taking place this Tuesday and Wednesday at school. Our day to shop is Wednesday, December 12th. The students brought home a note on Friday that gives more details however, as a reminder all items are $2.00.
