Dear Families,

What a great year!  It’s hard to believe it is over.  It has been a pleasure working with such a creative, hard working group of students.  I have seen tremendous growth in all of them academically & socially this year.  I feel very confident that they are ready for the next grade.  To help continue their academic growth, I am sending home a few items that I strongly suggest they complete during the summer months.

Math books:  We completed many of the pages in these books.  The remaining pages would be great to continue their learning at home.  I also suggest they continue on Zearn.org over the summer.  In addition, the students should keep up on their multiplication and division facts and algorithms so they do not get rusty this summer.

Reading Response Notebook: Students need to continue reading 30 minutes or more per day.  Then, they should respond to their reading in their notebook by writing about the characters, setting, events, problems, solution or summaries.

Writing Journal and Writing Notebook: The journal has entries that are personal narratives from their school year. Students should continue to write about their activities and events this summer.  They should also write creative fiction stories and informational pieces in their Writers Workshop notebook.

Have an enjoyable summer and stop by to say “Hi” in August!

      Fondly,

Mrs. Pischke

Science Activity

We started a unit on Electricity and circuits today.  The students were very excited with the learning and activity today and so for homework the students were asked to take 15 min. tonight (or longer if they choose) to do an activity on this concept.  They can read about the topic, do an online interactive activity or game or try to make an easy electromagnet (directions on our Google Classroom).  I wanted to make sure you knew it was something easy that they should be able to do quickly.

                           Life Science Events

On May 30th & 31st Oakwoods Nature Center Outreach Program will be coming to Howard to bring two Life Science programs to all of our 4th graders.  Since I have the money turned in for the Underground Railroad Field Trip that was cancelled back in January I will not need to collect money from our class for these programs, I will use this money instead. I will put any money left over into our last field trip of the year which will be on June 7th to Howell Nature Center.  However, we will not have enough to cover this trip entirely.  A permission slip with details about the trip and  the amount owed will be coming home soon.

Happy Wednesday!!

                   Upcoming Events

Project Based Learning:  All of the 4th grade students have been enjoying their life science unit that encompasses Creative Art, Language Arts, and Science. They have been working hard on these activities for the past several weeks and they will be ready to show off their hard work soon.

You are invited to Howard School on Wednesday, May 22nd  between 9:30-10:30 to meet with your child and to view their activities.  The projects and activities will be on display until 3:00 on that day, so if you cannot make it during this time frame you are welcome to stop at Howard School later in the day to view them on your own.  Do not worry if you can’t make it because the students will be bringing their project and activities home so you can  view it with them at that time.

NWEA Testing:  We will begin the math portion of the test on Monday, May 13th and will continue on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday as needed. The students have set goals for themselves and will get immediate results if they have met their goal. Their progress will also be recorded on their report card so it is important for them to do well. As always, it is helpful if you encourage your child to get good sleep before testing days and to eat healthy.

                Thank You!

Families ~ Thank you for an awesome Teacher Appreciation Week.  I love the flowers they are beautiful and make the classroom smell like Spring. Yesterday I received all of the wonderful gift cards you purchased.  My daughters and I enjoy shopping for things for our house, so it is going to be fun using all of the gift cards to my favorite stores.  Last but not least, the bulletin board that some of our homeroom parents created  is perfect.  The title “Team Pischke” if so fitting for what I believe.  We truly are all a team and your children are blessed to have parents who support them and myself during the school year.  Thank you, thank you, thank you, for showing your appreciation this week but most of for all of your support.  I appreciate all of you as well.

                                     M-STEP TESTING

The students finished the ELA portion of the M-STEP test last week.  I was proud of them during the testing. They appeared to be very focused and to try their best.  They will begin taking the math portion of the M-STEP tomorrow and continue on Wednesday and Thursday.   Once again, please encourage your child to get a good night’s sleep and to eat healthy on the days of testing.
