An example of this strategy is the Dolphins have the word lock. I might ask them to spell the word block, flock, sock, etc. I may also give them a nonsense word for the word lock. I might say if you can spell lock then you can spell the nonsense word (made up word to see if they know the spelling pattern) vock.
